The main difference between an Associate Coach and a Professional Coach lies in experience, certification level, and scope of work. Associate Coaches are often in early career stages with foundational certifications, supporting more senior coaches or working within organizations. Professional Coaches typically have advanced credentials, more independence, and handle complex client needs. Both roles are vital in the coaching industry, but they differ in responsibility and expertise.

Support the planning, organization, and execution of training sessions, including overseeing player attendance and providing feedback.
Assist with match day responsibilities such as lineup discussions, tactical adjustments, and postgame evaluations, and lead the team when the Head Coach is unavailable.
Help lead film analysis and scouting activities, including reviewing game footage, creating scouting reports, and identifying tactical improvements.
The Missouri Reign and AFC Columbia are seeking an Associate Head Coach for the upcoming season. This individual will serve as a key member of the coaching staff, working closely with the Head Coach to support the leadership, organization, and overall direction of both programs.
We are looking for someone who is passionate, open minded, dependable, and committed to finding the best solutions for the team instead of simply trying to be right. The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic, collaborative, and possess a deep knowledge of the game, a strong tactical mindset, and a clear understanding of technical and individual player development.
This position requires a significant time commitment throughout the season. The Associate Head Coach must be consistently available for staff meetings, training sessions, home and away matches, film analysis, scouting, player evaluations, and other team activities. Applicants must be present, focused, prepared, and punctual. This role requires someone who is willing to invest the time necessary to help provide the best possible experience for every player in the program.
The Associate Head Coach will also help lead the coaching staff, support communication across both programs, assist with training and match preparation, contribute to player development plans, and assume additional leadership responsibilities when the Head Coach is unavailable.
This is not a ceremonial title or a limited involvement position. It requires consistent communication, preparation outside of scheduled team activities, and a willingness to take ownership of important responsibilities throughout the season.
Note: This position is not a part of our internship program. It is intended for individuals who are looking to contribute directly to the coaching, leadership, and development aspects of Missouri Reign and AFC Columbia. Because of the importance and responsibility of this role, selected applicants will participate in an extensive interview process.
ResponsibilitiesYour responsibilities will include:
Training Sessions:
Take an active leadership role in team training sessions, focusing on individual and collective development.
Collaborate with the Head Coach and coaching staff to plan, organize, and execute training sessions.
Help oversee player attendance and communicate attendance concerns with the Head Coach.
Monitor player development throughout the season, identifying strengths, weaknesses, and areas for continued growth.
Provide players with immediate feedback during training and contribute to written evaluations at the end of the season.
Training Setup and Execution:
Assist the Head Coach in creating effective training plans that align with the team’s playing philosophy and season objectives.
Help assign responsibilities to staff members and ensure sessions are organized and ready to begin on time.
Propose drills and exercises that address the technical, tactical, physical, and mental needs of the team.
Observe the overall effectiveness of training activities and provide constructive feedback to the coaching staff.
Lead portions of training and full sessions when requested by the Head Coach.
Attend home and away matches, providing coaching support, tactical insight, and leadership during match situations.
Assist the Head Coach with lineup discussions, substitutions, tactical adjustments, and player management.
Help coordinate pregame responsibilities, including jersey distribution, field setup, event setup, and warmup preparation.
Observe and analyze team and individual performances during matches.
Contribute to postgame evaluations and help identify priorities for upcoming training sessions.
Assume leadership of the team when the Head Coach is unavailable.
Film Analysis and Scouting:
Help lead the review and analysis of game footage, providing clear and useful feedback to players and staff.
Work closely with the Head Coach to identify tactical adjustments, recurring trends, and areas for improvement.
Coordinate the creation of scouting reports on opposing teams.
Collaborate with the coaching staff to develop a detailed staff scouting report and a condensed version for the players.
Help present film and scouting information in a way that is clear, focused, and connected to the team’s game plan.
Player Development:
Provide consistent and personalized feedback to players, highlighting both strengths and areas for improvement.
Help advance each player’s technical understanding, tactical awareness, confidence, and decision making.
Work with the Head Coach to establish individual player development and performance plans.
Monitor progress toward individual goals throughout the season.
Help complete written player evaluations at the end of the season.
Serve as a trusted resource for players while maintaining clear communication and appropriate staff boundaries.
Coaching and Staff Leadership:
Work closely with the Head Coach to develop and maintain a unified coaching strategy.
Help ensure that the coaching staff understands and consistently applies the team’s standards, principles, and playing philosophy.
Take an active leadership role in staff meetings by contributing insights on tactics, player performance, team culture, and overall development.
Help coordinate staff responsibilities for training sessions, matches, film analysis, scouting, and player evaluations.
Support communication between the Head Coach, assistant coaches, players, and other team personnel.
Provide guidance and support to assistant coaches while promoting collaboration across the entire staff.
Represent and reinforce the decisions of the Head Coach and coaching staff.
Embrace a player first approach that prioritizes the well being, development, and progress of every player.
Build meaningful relationships with players while holding them accountable to team standards.
Support players in their individual development, regardless of their role, playing time, or position within the team.
Help nurture a positive and competitive team culture grounded in inclusivity, accountability, consistency, and shared success.
Communicate player concerns and development needs to the Head Coach when appropriate.
Model the professionalism, commitment, and behavior expected throughout the program.
Reserve Team Leadership and Assistance:
Take an active leadership role in the organization and operation of the reserve team.
Assist with training plans, match preparation, player selection, and coaching responsibilities for reserve team activities.
Ensure that the reserve team follows the same playing philosophy, standards, and developmental priorities as the first team.
Track the progress of reserve players and communicate their development to the Head Coach and coaching staff.
Help identify players who are prepared for additional first team opportunities.
Give every player in a reserve role the same dedication, communication, and commitment provided to first team players.
Note: These duties are shared by the entire coaching staff. The Associate Head Coach is expected to help coordinate these responsibilities, support the Head Coach, provide leadership across the staff, and step into the Head Coach’s role when needed.
