This role is responsible for being one of the lead supports for capital analysis & communication for Markel management.
Analysis and reporting performed by the team is used by senior leaders to drive data-informed decisions at group, division, legal entity and product line levels. Active collaboration with global capital team managers as well as key stakeholders and business partners across underwriting, finance & actuarial, strategy, risk management and other functions is required. Maintaining strong working relationships across the company is critical to the success of this role. Strong communication skills are essential. This position will report to the Global Capital Manager based in Richmond, VA.
Responsibilities:
  • Support the capital team in preparing quarterly Solvency Capital Requirement (SCR) outputs for Markel insurance entities.
  • Participates in the ongoing update of UW target setting models used in capital allocation across insurance. Analyze and report on performance vs. budget and support the communication to the business.
  • Maintain proper data flows from key data providers to the capital models. Challenge current processes and constantly be thinking of better ways to receive and send information.
  • Develop data manipulation skillsets in Business Intelligence (BI) and data visualization applications.
  • Facilitate the update of insurance and global return on capital analysis models used to evaluate company performance. Create digestible stories for leadership based on quarterly results.
  • Partner with the FP&A team and financial planning capital manager to properly input business plans into the capital models and reconcile results.
  • Digest model use requests from leadership and support the Global Capital Managers in performing ad-hoc time sensitive analysis used to drive strategy and business decisions in real time.
  • Partner with various teams across finance to effectively manage relationships and requirements of Markel's rating agencies.
  • Ensuring that work is delivered on time and to a high standard.
  • Represent the capital department on cross-functional workstreams.
  • Support corporate goals and principles and communicating those to members of the team.
  • Work with multiple internal teams to gain a deeper understanding of financial data, to confirm assumptions, and validate output of analyses.
  • Document standard processes and process workflows.

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in a numeric discipline such as finance, accounting, actuarial.
  • Graduate degree is a plus, but not required.

Certification:
  • CPA, CFA, or another financial certification is a plus, but not required.

Skills, knowledge and experience:
  • Analytical curiosity with a business-oriented mindset. This will be applied to financial modelling and quantitative interpretation of data, creating/analyzing/summarizing financial statement forecasts, automation to processes and an ability to strategically streamline, and understanding of financial processes and systems.
  • Experience with Power BI, Power Query, SQL is desired
  • Strong relationship building skills with a thoughtful, constructive challenge mindset.
  • Be able to work across departments, disciplines and geographies with sufficient authority.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • A customer service mindset.
  • Team player who can excel in a highly collaborative team environment and can work closely with team leadership to contribute to and execute team strategies and plans.
