Position Summary:
The intercollegiate athletics program is an integral part of the university striving to achieve the same standards excellence in athletics thatexist within academic programs. Theprogram is concerned with the physical and mental welfare of the student andstrives to ensure that every athlete has the opportunity to succeedacademically and obtain a degree. Sportsprograms are a vital function of the University at large.
The Athletic Trainer reports to the Director of Sports Medicine and Senior Associate Athletic Director/SWA and is responsible for assisting in the direction of all aspects of the athletictraining Program. This position exists to coordinate the prevention, management and rehabilitation of athletic injuries sustained by student-athletes in all 15 varsity sport programs, serving as the primary athletic trainer for selected sports. An emphasis with Division I athletics experience ispreferred.
Job Duties:
70% Prevent, provide acute treatment and rehabilitation for athletic injuries in student-athletes.
Major duties include:
20% Educate and supervise athletic training students including competency sign-offs. Cooperate with the Athletic TrainingEducation Program administrative staff to assist with programs designed toeducate and train future athletic trainers.
10% Implementationof all Sports Medicine policies andprocedures
This position would require ahigh degree of independent thought and critical thinking during potentially life threatening situations. The successful candidate must be able to foresee possible situations that could be
dangerous in athleticcompetition or practice, such as lightning or heat illness that would put astudent-athlete at risk. This personmust be able to develop a logical and safe progressive rehabilitation programand be able to determine when it is safe to return a student-athlete back toparticipation, while communicating with the team physicians, administrators,athletic trainers, coaches and student-athletes. The Assistant Athletic Trainer must also be able to superviseand evaluate student athletic trainers while they are performing their athletictraining competency skills. At times, the position would demand a high degree of problem solving and multi-tasking ability. Getting athletes, physicians, parents,coaches, and athletic staff working together can be complex because of one'sdifferent goals. Effectivecommunication skills are essential in developing and maintaining professionalworking relationships. Effectivedocumentation skills are essential for maintaining appropriate records of student-athletes' injuries, the treatments and progressions.
This position will provide a positive impact for athletic coverage and treatment of student-athletes.Student-athletes will receive the opportunity for appropriate care andtreatment of athletic injuries And a possible reduction of injuries due to the increased attention to student-athletes and their activities. Athletic Training studentswill receive more individualized and direct education in a practical/clinicalSetting. The Assistant AthleticTrainer will enhance our educational program and allow the academic Program tosatisfy national accreditation standards.
The Director ofSports Medicine/Head Athletic Trainer would supervise and monitor the AssistantAthletic Trainer and his/her athletic training activity regularly and provide feed back on a weekly basis atdepartment meetings. Dailyinteraction with supervision is common. Formalannual evaluations will be performed by the Director of Sports Medicine/HeadAthletic Trainer with assistance from the Senior Associate Athletic Director. Program and employee reviews are doneannually within the Athletic department.
Minimum Qualifications:
A minimum of a Master's Degree in Athletic Training or related field or experience.
Two (2) years of athletic training experience is required. Experience at the Division I collegiate level preferred.
NATA Certification required; Colorado Licensure required/eligible; first-aid, CPR and AED certified
Basic computer skills required(Microsoft Office Windows), communication, problem solving, management, supervisory and organizational skills, ability to work well under pressure; knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations. Must be able to work nights andweekends as required.
