Reports To: Director of Exceptional Children
Position Status: 12-Month, Full-Time
Department: Exceptional Children
Position Summary
The Specialized Programs Coordinator provides district-level leadership, coordination, supervision, and support for specialized programs and services that address the unique educational, communication, physical, sensory, nutritional, technological, and access needs of students with disabilities. The coordinator oversees assigned specialized staff and programs, collaborates with schools and district departments, supports compliance and program quality, and provides professional development and technical assistance to staff.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Specialized Program Leadership
- Provide leadership and coordination for specialized programs and services across the district.
- Oversee assigned specialized staff and services, including Visual Impairment (VI), Deaf/Hard of Hearing (DHH), educational interpreters, Adapted Physical Education, music therapy, assistive technology, and other specialized programs.
- Monitor program implementation and service delivery and make recommendations for improvement.
- Collaborate with school administrators, EC staff, families, related service providers, and district departments to address student needs.
- Assist with staffing, budgeting, purchasing, resource allocation, and program planning related to specialized services.
Specialized Services
- Coordinate VI and DHH services and support staff serving students with sensory disabilities.
- Coordinate educational interpreter services and communication supports.
- Oversee specialized meal-time programs in collaboration with School Nutrition Services, schools, families, and appropriate staff to address feeding, positioning, safety, and other unique student needs.
- Coordinate special transportation needs in collaboration with the Transportation Department, including facilitating monthly coordination meetings to address student needs, concerns, equipment, safety, and service delivery.
- Provide leadership and support for Adapted Physical Education and music therapy programs and staff.
- Coordinate assistive technology and specialized equipment, including acquisition, implementation, inventory, maintenance, and staff training.
- Serve as a district resource for schools regarding specialized equipment, accommodations, accessibility, and student supports.
Professional Development and Technical Assistance
- Develop and provide professional development for teachers, teacher assistants, administrators, related service providers, specialized staff, and other school personnel.
- Provide training and technical assistance related to VI, DHH, interpreting, specialized meal-time programs, transportation, adapted physical education, music therapy, assistive technology, specialized equipment, accessibility, accommodations, and inclusive practices.
- Provide ongoing consultation, coaching, and problem-solving support to school-based staff.
- Identify professional development needs and coordinate training based on student needs, staff needs, compliance requirements, and best practices.
Compliance and Program Monitoring
- Support compliance with federal, state, and local requirements related to specialized programs and services.
- Monitor services and programs for alignment with student IEPs, district procedures, and applicable regulations.
- Maintain appropriate documentation and records related to specialized programs, staffing, equipment, and professional development.
- Assist the Director of Exceptional Children with program evaluation, reporting, audits, and compliance activities.
- Stay current with laws, regulations, research, and best practices related to specialized programming.
Collaboration and Communication
- Serve as a liaison between the Exceptional Children Department, schools, families, and district departments regarding specialized programs and student needs.
- Establish effective working relationships with school and district personnel to ensure coordinated services and supports.
- Participate in meetings, planning activities, and district initiatives related to specialized programming, accessibility, inclusion, and student safety.
- Assist the Director of Exceptional Children with special projects and other responsibilities as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of special education and the educational needs of students with disabilities.
- Knowledge of specialized programs, assistive technology, adaptive equipment, accessibility, and accommodations.
- Strong organizational, communication, collaboration, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to coordinate multiple programs, personnel, and projects across multiple school sites.
- Ability to provide effective professional development, coaching, and technical assistance.

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Special Education, Exceptional Children, Education, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
- Appropriate North Carolina licensure/certification as required by the position.
- Demonstrated experience working with students with disabilities and specialized programs.
- Demonstrated leadership, supervisory, or program coordination experience.
- Experience providing professional development, training, consultation, or technical assistance to school staff.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Special Education, Exceptional Children, Educational Leadership, or a related field.
- Experience coordinating district-wide specialized programs or related services.
- Experience with VI, DHH, assistive technology, specialized equipment, or other specialized student services.
Work Schedule
This is a 12-month, full-time district-level position requiring flexibility to visit schools, attend meetings, provide professional development, and respond to specialized program needs throughout the year.
Supervisory Relationship
The Specialized Programs Coordinator reports directly to the Director of Exceptional Children and provides leadership, coordination, and supervision of assigned specialized program staff and services.
