What is an assistive tech specialist?

An Assistive Tech Specialist is a professional who evaluates, recommends, and supports the use of assistive technologies for individuals with disabilities. They work to identify tools and devices—such as communication aids, mobility equipment, or specialized software—that help people overcome barriers in education, work, or daily life. These specialists also train users, families, and educators on how to effectively use assistive technology. Their goal is to promote independence and improve quality of life for those with diverse needs.

What kinds of teams and professionals does an assistive tech specialist typically collaborate with in their daily work?

Assistive Tech Specialists frequently work alongside educators, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, IT staff, and case managers to assess user needs and implement technology solutions. They may also collaborate with students, families, or end-users to provide training and ongoing support. This multidisciplinary teamwork ensures that assistive technologies are tailored to each individual's goals, integrated smoothly into learning or work environments, and maintained effectively over time. Regular communication and collaboration are essential for success in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an assistive tech specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Assistive Tech Specialist, you need expertise in assistive technology devices, a background in special education or rehabilitation, and relevant certifications such as ATP (Assistive Technology Professional). Familiarity with assessment tools, adaptive software, and device configuration systems is typically required. Strong communication, problem-solving, and patience are important soft skills for working effectively with clients and interdisciplinary teams. These skills ensure that individuals with disabilities receive personalized solutions that enhance their independence and participation.
