Job Description Summary
CHARACTER OF DUTIES:
Under the supervision of the Interim Associate Director for agInnovation, the Research Assistant I will play a crucial role in the maintenance and daily operations of the Guam Aquaculture Development and Training Center (GADTC), commonly known as the Fadian Hatchery. The individual will assist in the care, culture, and research of various aquaculture species maintained at the facility. The Research Assistant I will perform essential hatchery and farm operations to maintain a clean, safe, and productive environment. Duties include draining and cleaning tanks and ponds; routine maintenance and minor repair of plumbing systems, pumps, aerators, and other aquaculture equipment; and general grounds maintenance. The individual will also assist with tank and pond preparation, stocking, grading, and harvesting activities. A key responsibility of this position includes daily animal husbandry tasks. This includes preparing and administering feed to cultured species, including fish and shrimp, according to established feeding schedules and protocols; monitoring feeding behavior; adjusting feeding rates as directed; and maintaining accurate feeding and growth records. The individual will also assist in observing animal health, reporting abnormalities, and supporting basic health management and biosecurity practices. Additional duties include monitoring and maintaining water quality parameters (e.g., temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, and pH), collecting samples, and recording data to support ongoing research and production activities. The Research Assistant I will also assist faculty and staff with applied research projects, including data collection and basic experimental setup. Operating a range of battery- or gas-powered equipment is required, with an emphasis on proper handling, safety, and routine maintenance. Proficiency in the use of hand tools, as well as equipment such as bush cutters and grass mowers, is expected for facility upkeep. The individual will also be responsible for assisting with the maintenance and cleanliness of official GADTC vehicles. Finally, the individual will be flexible in undertaking ad hoc duties related to Hatchery maintenance and operations as directed by superiors.
Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION:
High School Diploma (HS) or GED, 31-90 or more college credits or 3 years relevant and related work experience.

NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATION:
Must have a valid driver's license.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Pursuant to Public Law 26-87 as amended by Public Law 29-113, all future employees of any position within the government of Guam will be required at minimum to possess one of the following:
1. A high school diploma; or
2. Successful completion of General Education Development (GED) Test; or
3. The equivalent of a general education high school program; or
4. Successful completion of a certification program, from a recognized accredited or certified vocational technical institution, in a specialized field for the job.
Preferred Qualifications Minimum Knowledge, Abilities and Skills
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND/OR SKILLS:
Must have excellent oral and written communication skills. Basic knowledge of aquaculture practices, including animal husbandry, water quality management, and biosecurity procedures, is preferred. Ability to perform minor repairs and
routine maintenance on equipment and structures. Ability to monitor and record environmental and biological data accurately. Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and comfortable working around water-filled ponds and
tanks. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team. Ability to follow standard operating procedures and maintain detailed records of hatchery operations.

The University of Guam is required to comply with this law on a non-discriminatory basis. Due to budgetary constraints, UOG is not able to pay the additional application cost of $100,000 as required by the U.S. Presidential Proclamation for any applicants that will require an H1B Visa to legally work at UOG.

Pursuant to Public Law No. 28-24 and Executive Order No. 2005-34, applicants selected for a position are required to provide original police and court (Superior Court of Guam) clearances of no more than three (3) months old prior to commencement of employment. Off-island applicants must obtain clearances from their place of residence. Applicants are responsible for fees associated with obtaining the clearances.
