Veterinary Assistant

SPCA of Brazoria County

Lake Jackson, TX

$15/hr

Full-time

Posted 8 days ago

Job description

The SPCA of Brazoria County is seeking a Veterinary Assistant to join our veterinary team and help provide daily medical care to animals in our shelter.

This is a hands-on position for someone who is passionate about animal welfare and wants to be part of a team focused on keeping shelter animals healthy, comfortable, and ready for adoption.

The Veterinary Assistant will work closely with the Medical Director, veterinary technicians, and animal care team to support daily medical operations, patient care, treatments, cleaning, preparation, and shelter-medicine activities.

Veterinary experience is preferred, but we are willing to train the right person who has strong animal-handling skills, a good work ethic, and a willingness to learn.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist veterinary technicians and veterinarians with daily patient care.

  • Safely handle and restrain dogs and cats for examinations and treatments.

  • Assist with intake examinations and preventative care.

  • Help prepare animals for veterinary examinations and procedures.

  • Assist with vaccinations and other medical procedures as directed and permitted.

  • Prepare and organize treatment areas and medical supplies.

  • Clean and disinfect kennels, treatment areas, equipment, and medical workspaces.

  • Assist with maintaining appropriate shelter sanitation and disease-control practices.

  • Help monitor animals for changes in appetite, behavior, injury, illness, or other medical concerns.

  • Report medical or behavioral concerns to the veterinary team.

  • Assist with medication and treatment routines as directed by veterinary staff.

  • Assist with preparing animals for surgery and recovering animals following procedures.

  • Help transport and move animals safely between the shelter, cattery, and veterinary areas.

  • Maintain accurate documentation and assist with medical records.

  • Restock medical supplies and notify veterinary staff when supplies are low.

  • Assist with laundry, cleaning, stocking, and general organization of the medical area.

  • Follow shelter-medicine protocols, safety procedures, and established SOPs.

  • Practice compassionate, low-stress handling whenever possible.

  • Work as part of a team to provide consistent care to animals.

  • Assist with other shelter and veterinary duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

  • Ability to safely handle dogs and cats.

  • Ability to work around animals who may be frightened, stressed, sick, injured, or behaviorally challenging.

  • Strong work ethic and dependable attendance.

  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and veterinary protocols.

  • Ability to work as part of a team.

  • Ability to maintain a clean and organized work environment.

  • Ability to lift, carry, and safely move animals and supplies.

  • Compassionate attitude toward animals and people.

Preferred:

  • Previous veterinary assistant experience.

  • Previous shelter or rescue experience.

  • Experience working with dogs and cats.

  • Experience with animal restraint and handling.

  • Experience administering or assisting with animal medications.

  • Experience assisting with surgery or anesthesia recovery.

  • Experience in a veterinary clinic, animal shelter, rescue organization, kennel, or animal-care facility.

  • Fear Free or low-stress animal handling experience.

The Right Candidate

The ideal candidate is someone who is reliable, hands-on, compassionate, and willing to learn.

Shelter medicine can be fast-paced and unpredictable. Our team may care for healthy animals receiving preventative care one moment and animals requiring urgent medical attention the next.

We are looking for someone who understands that every task—from cleaning a treatment area to helping restrain an animal for an examination—plays an important role in lifesaving.

You do not have to know everything on day one. We are looking for someone who wants to learn, works well with a team, and genuinely cares about animal welfare.
