JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Underwriting Hub is CNA's centralized underwriting organization responsible for managing renewal business across multiple products, segments, and regions. The Hub combines underwriting expertise, operational excellence, and portfolio management disciplines to deliver consistent underwriting quality, scalable capacity, and strong business outcomes.

Under broad supervision, the Associate Underwriter, Hub is responsible for underwriting and servicing an assigned book of existing renewal business in a high-volume underwriting environment. The role serves as the file lead for assigned accounts from rollover through policy

issuance and ongoing account servicing, making underwriting and servicing decisions within assigned Letter of Underwriting Authority (LOA).

The Associate Underwriter performs underwriting analysis, manages account activity, communicates directly with internal and external business partners, and ensures timely execution of renewal and servicing activities. For matters requiring additional authority, technical

expertise, or guidance, the Associate Underwriter develops a supported recommendation and engages the appropriate referral partner while maintaining ownership of execution and follow-through through final resolution.

Performs a combination of duties in accordance with departmental guidelines:

  • Serves as the file lead for an assigned book of renewal business, managing accounts from rollover through renewal decision, policy issuance, and ongoing servicing activities.

  • Performs underwriting analysis and documentation to determine acceptability of risk in accordance with company guidelines, underwriting strategy, and assigned Letter of Underwriting Authority.

  • Manages account workflow and renewal timelines for a high volume of assigned accounts, balancing underwriting reviews, service requests, referrals, stakeholder communication, and documentation requirements to ensure timely completion of work.

  • Reviews exposures, loss experience, applications, specifications, and account changes to identify underwriting considerations, information needs, and matters requiring referral or escalation.

  • Makes underwriting and servicing decisions within delegated authority and refers matters outside authority to the appropriate referral partner with supporting analysis and recommended action.

  • Maintains ownership of assigned accounts through final resolution, including coordination of referrals, approvals, endorsements, policy issuance activities, account changes, and required documentation.

  • Handles endorsements, cancellations, audits, billing and collection matters, and other account servicing activities within delegated authority while coordinating with internal partners as needed.

  • Communicates directly with brokers, agents, customers, field underwriting partners, Line of Business leaders, Risk Control, Underwriting Services, and other internal business partners to obtain information, resolve issues, and support account outcomes.

  • Prepares quote and renewal proposals and negotiates account terms, pricing, and conditions within assigned authority, escalating matters requiring additional authority or technical guidance.

  • Documents assigned files to ensure completeness, compliance, quality, and appropriate support for underwriting decisions.

  • Utilizes pricing tools, systems, workflows, and business processes to support accurate underwriting decisions and efficient execution of assigned account activity.

  • Keeps current on Line of Business strategy, state and territory considerations, regulations, industry developments, and underwriting guidelines relevant to assigned business.

  • Invests in ongoing technical and professional development through internal training, coaching, professional designations, and learning opportunities.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  • Knowledge of Property and Casualty underwriting, insurance products, policy processing procedures, and documentation standards.

  • Ability to serve as file lead on assigned accounts and manage a defined book of business within delegated authority.

  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage work effectively in a high-volume underwriting environment.

  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to evaluate risk and apply underwriting guidelines appropriately within assigned authority.

  • Strong organization, time management, and follow-through skills across multiple accounts and competing deadlines.

Education & Experience

Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. Typically a minimum of three years of commercial insurance, underwriting support, account management, risk evaluation, or related experience demonstrating the ability to exercise judgment, make decisions, and manage assigned

work independently.

In certain jurisdictions, CNA is legally required to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. In District of Columbia, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York and Washington, the national base pay range for this job level is $47,000 to $78,000 annually.Salary determinations are based on various factors, including but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and location.
