Manager, Interior Design Unit

The Manager of the Interior Design Unit provides leadership and strategic oversight for the planning, design, and implementation of interior environments across the university campus. This position directs the Interior Design team within Facilities Planning, and collaborates with architects, engineers, contractors, and campus stakeholders to ensure that interior spaces support the university's academic mission, institutional values, and longterm campus development goals.

The Manager ensures that all interior design projects-ranging from small renovations to major building initiatives-are executed according to university standards, regulatory requirements, and budget constraints while maintaining high levels of design quality, durability, and stewardship. This individual serves as a key liaison between university leadership, campus clients, consultants, and internal project teams throughout all phases of interior design work.

This position requires to be fully on-site at the assigned campus location.

What you'll do in this position

  • Supervise fulltime, parttime, and student employees; hire and train new staff; and ensure workloads are balanced across the team.
  • Guide and mentor designers in their professional development and ensure design work aligns with university standards and departmental objectives.
  • Provide comprehensive planning and design services for renovations, remodels, and new construction projects.
  • Meet with campus clients to understand needs, provide design education, and guide decisionmaking related to materials, furnishings, finishes, fixtures, equipment, and code requirements.
  • Specify products that meet client needs while adhering to campus standards and financial constraints.
  • Prepare and review furniture orders, ensuring accuracy, appropriate quantities, and compliance with warranties and quality expectations.
  • Manage the university's new furniture inventory and ensure proper use and tracking.
  • Visit project sites to verify compliance with plans, specifications, and design intent.
  • Assist architects, contractors, shop personnel, and project coordinators in resolving issues that arise during construction or installation; participate in inspections and punchlist activities.
  • Produce and maintain formal documentation outlining interior design standards for onboarding new designers and ensuring consistency across campus.
  • Provide input on all new building projects and advise on budgetary parameters for furnishings and finishes.

What qualifies you for this role

Required

  • A firm commitment to the mission of BYU.
  • Bachelor's degree in Interior Design.
  • 10 years of commercial interior design experience, including CAD proficiency.
  • NCIDQ certification.
  • Strong working knowledge of construction documents, systems furniture specifications, finishes, and their appropriate applications.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clients, administrators, architects, engineers, and contractors.
  • Demonstrated management and supervisory skills, including resource planning and team leadership.
  • Ability to balance design excellence with cost, schedule, and institutional priorities while managing multiple projects simultaneously.

Preferred

  • Degree from a CIDAaccredited program.
  • 10+ years of experience in the interior design industry.
  • Experience with systems furniture and highereducation facilities planning, design, and construction.

Working conditions

This position operates primarily in an office environment but requires frequent site visits to active construction areas. Work may involve climbing under or around furniture, lifting 20-50 lbs., carrying large samples, and assisting with furniture installation or inventory. Occasional travel may be required for training and product research. The role involves regular interaction with campus personnel, consultants, and vendors.

Location: This position is 100% on-site.

Pay Grade: 55

Typical Starting Pay: $92,000.00 to $119,000.00 annually
