Job description

The Hill, a division of Nexstar Media Group, is seeking an Audience Engagement Editor to help connect The Hill's journalism to audiences around the country. We're looking for someone who has an eye for a sharp story angle, who can make copy stronger but also capitalize on search and social trends to help our stories reach a wider audience.

It's a position that bridges our editing and audience teams and is meant to make them more cohesive. We want someone who can help other editors and reporters understand how to reach wider audiences through informed word choices and headline decisions.

The person in this role will edit copy, assign stories, and write social media messages. The ability to incorporate video into our products will be valued.

The preference is for a Washington D.C. based candidate. However, we are also open to Mountain and Pacific time zones candidates if they are the right fit. Nights and weekends are mandatory for this role.

We're looking for someone who can:

Communicate story ideas with editors and provide feedback in real time.

Think like a strategist as well as an editor. You should be able to balance the art of impactful journalism with the science of analytics.

Post breaking news across multiple platforms (Social Media, Email, App Alerts).

Lead and make decisions in a breaking news environment. Notice trends early and build content around developing stories.

Write clean, concise copy on tight deadlines (i.e. SEO Content and Breaking News stubs).

Demonstrate strong editing skills, bringing out the best headlines and copy from our talented staff.

Bring the newsroom up to date on everything from TikTok trends to YouTube reels and can help grow our social presence on emerging platforms.

Candidates should have these skills and qualifications:

Fast, accurate, detail-oriented writing skills.

Excellent critical thinking skills. An eye for details and an ability to spot both errors and lifeless copy.

Experience writing, editing and publishing in a fast-paced editorial environment that relies heavily on strong news judgment.

A background in coaching reporters is required, as is experience developing the skills of editors.

Ability to work across multiple stakeholder groups to drive audience growth and traffic performance.

Bachelor's degree in journalism or communications experience working in a newsroom.

Excellent communicator who works well as part of a team.

Experience posting across multiple social media platforms and creating video content.

Experience selecting news content for multiple distribution channels. Experienced communicating in a brand voice (i.e. writing professional social media posts). Proficient with traffic and engagement software (e.g. Chartbeat, SocialFlow, Google Analytics, Later, Google Search Console).
