The salary range for this position is CAD $41.44/Hr. - CAD $51.76/Hr.

Eligibility for the post-basic training education is prioritized to applicants with at least two years recent acute experience.

Vancouver General Hospital Anesthesia Assistant Trainee Program

Duration of Training: 3 months part-time distance study, 6 months full-time apprenticeship, 3 months orientation.

Full-time apprenticeship begins: January 4, 2027.

Candidates accepting this training opportunity agree to remain with Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) as a regular status Anesthesia Assistant in the area applicable to the education program for which they are hired for at least 12 months subsequent to completing training.

This will ensure that candidates are able to consolidate and apply skills in the specialty area that VCH has supported and funded candidates to complete. In the event that a candidate leaves the area applicable to the education program for which they were hired or VCH in under 12 months, VCH will seek to recover the cost of the program.

Within the context of a patient/client and family-centred framework and continuum-based care model and in accordance with established standards of professional practice and the vision, values and policies of the organization, the anesthesia assistant trainee functions as an integral member of the surgical team through provision of technical support and clinical assistance with induction, maintenance and emergence of anesthesia, under clinical supervision and direction of the attending anesthesiologist and in accordance with the standards of practice guidelines of the Canadian Anesthesiologists’ Society. The anesthesia assistant trainee will report to the clinical educator for learning outcomes and schedule of rotation. The education team (supervisor, educator and anesthesiologist) will assess progress of trainee and develop ongoing plan to help trainee meet all learning requirements. The anesthesia assistant trainee will provide clinical assistance under the supervision of an attending anesthesiologist. Technical duties will be performed following demonstration from a staff anesthesia assistant and direction from the Clinical Educator and/or Supervisor.

Upon successful completion of the training program, you will be moved into a Regular Full Time Anesthesia Assistant position at Vancouver General Hospital.

Education & Experience

  • Graduation from an accredited Respiratory Therapy program.
  • One year of critical care experience or two years’ experience in an acute care environment.

The hours of work including days off and work area may be subject to change consistent with operational requirements and the provision of the Collective Agreement and applicable statutes. Successful applicants may be required to complete a Criminal Records Review Check.
As per Ministry of Health policy, all health care workers working in publicly-funded health care facilities are required to report their past receipt of certain vaccines or history of certain infections. Collecting these records will allow for offering of any missing vaccines, and for appropriate actions to be taken in the event of any future exposure to a communicable disease or during outbreaks. For all new hires and appointments to Vancouver Coastal Health, you will be asked to provide this information as part of the onboarding process.
