Job Title: Controller


POSITION SUMMARY

The Controller is a strategic leader responsible for overseeing all financial aspects of the organization. This includes financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and analysis to support decision-making processes. The role involves managing financial operations, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, and providing strategic guidance to senior management. The Controller plays a key role in driving financial performance, optimizing resource allocation, and identifying opportunities for growth and efficiency improvement. Strong leadership, analytical skills, and extensive experience in financial management are essential for success in this role.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Essential Functions:

  • Oversee the timely and accurate closing of books each month and prepare monthly financial reports for Board, senior management, and bank โ€“ income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow statement.
  • Prepare annual budget and periodic annual and quarterly forecasts to help guide senior management in planning and managing the business in a profitable manner.
  • Utilize/prepare profitability reports monthly and periodically to analyze operations and guide President, the Board, and senior management on financial results, challenges, and opportunities. Participate in periodic business review and strategic planning discussions, providing needed financial guidance and leadership.
  • Work with outside accounting firm to guide annual accounting review of financial statements and processes that is necessary to provide Board and the bank with annual reviewed financial statements, as required by both.
  • Oversee and provide guidance for conducting biannual physical inventory checks of paper, ink, plates, and other materials.
  • Supervise and assist in managing the investment committee, the annual 401(k) plan audit for Journal Graphics, Inc., and the annual filing of form 5500.
  • Prepare and submit monthly and quarterly sales/use tax filings, as well as quarterly CAT tax filings in Oregon.
  • Take charge of customer communication and internal team collaboration to ensure timely cash collection and effective AR management on a weekly basis.
  • Evaluate and determine credit decisions pertaining to customers
  • Oversee billing and job costing function, providing input and guidance as needed and reviewing monthly summary of job billings/costs.
  • Oversee and/or prepare all G/L account reconciliations.
  • Oversee monthly tracking and payment of commissions as well as the accounts payable process.


POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Competencies:

  • Advanced knowledge of accounting processes and principles, including working knowledge of major GAAP principles and practices.
  • Detailed, working knowledge of sales/use tax laws and broad knowledge of income tax laws.
  • Written and verbal communication skills for communicating with senior management, banks, auditors, and the Board.
  • Engage as a valued member of the leadership team and actively contribute to the collective efforts of the entire organization.
  • Organizational and supervisory experience and skills needed to oversee and manage financial aspects of a complex ERP system.

SKILLS & ABILITIES

Education: Undergraduate degree in business, in accounting and/or finance.

Experience: Minimum of 10 years of experience in positions of increasing responsibility in industry financial roles and a minimum of five yearsโ€™ experience as a Controller or higher management position in finance. Experience in a manufacturing company is preferred. Experience in public accounting firm โ€“ two years or greater โ€“ is preferred.

Computer Skills: Intermediate level skills in Excel and Word. Knowledge of and some experience with Excel pivot tables is also a plus.

Certificates & Licenses: CPA certification preferred.
