POSITION SUMMARY:
The Assistant Controller will be responsible for the general accounting for this publicly held company and its subsidiaries. This position will be responsible for managing the monthly close process, joint interest billing and reporting process, supervising accounts payable, developing and maintaining accounting principles, practices, and procedures to ensure accurate and timely financial information. This position addresses tight monthly reporting deadlines and a multitude of accounting activities including technical accounting research, general ledger preparation, joint interest operations reporting, yearend audit preparation and the support of budget and forecast activities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Leads professional staff in the development of monthly US GAAP financial results, including the appropriate analysis and support of all general ledger balances and review and supervision of the monthly close process.
  • Obtains and maintains a thorough understanding of the financial reporting and general ledger structure.
  • Ensures an accurate and timely monthly, quarterly and year end close.
  • Supports budget and forecasting activities.
  • Collaborates cross functionally to support overall department goals and objectives.
  • Monitors and analyzes department work to develop more efficient procedures and use of resources while maintaining a high level of accuracy.
  • Ensures that internal controls performed by his/her team are being performed properly and are effective to ensure the accuracy and timeliness of the financial information.
  • Advises staff regarding the handling of non-routine reporting transactions, including research documentation and memos.
  • Oversees monthly analysis of financial results including analysis of actual operating expenses, general and administrative expenses and overall financial results versus budget and forecasts, changes in balance sheet accounts and spend against AFEs.
  • Is proactive in understanding and communicating to stakeholders the drivers behind the financial results.
  • Responds to inquiries from the Financial Reporting Manager, joint interest partners, Treasurer, Controller, CFO and other finance and firm-wide managers regarding financial results, special reporting requests and the like.
  • Works closely with the CAO to maintain a strong internal control environment for financial reporting and which are in compliance with corporate standardized policies. Evaluates the implication of any identified possible internal control weaknesses and works with the CAO to develop an appropriate remediation plans.
  • Closely supervises the accounts payable clerk.
  • Assists in development and implementation of new procedures and features to enhance the workflow of the department.
  • Provides regular ad hoc training to new and existing staff covering technical accounting matters, use of systems and software and operational matters.
  • Handles personnel issues relating to staff conflicts, absenteeism, performance issues, etc.
  • Works with each direct report to establish goals and objectives for each year and monitor and advise on the progress to enhance the professional development of staff.
  • Supports Controller with special projects and workflow process improvements.
  • Performs other duties and services to ensure a successful project(s) is delivered and client is satisfied.
  • Maintains excellent attendance and punctuality.

EDUCATION & REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • CPA or CPA eligible
  • Five to ten years' experience accounting and reporting for oil & gas exploration and production company.

SKILLS, QUALIFICATIONS, AND OTHER ABILITIES:
  • Familiarity with IDEAS
  • Strong US GAAP knowledge
  • Strong organizational skills and detail orientation.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient in working as part of a team; self-motivated
  • Strong working knowledge of personal computers with proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, or comparable software.
