Job description

Must have a willingness to work hard and to learn as you go. This position is located in a kitchen where we bulk prepare school meals.

Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent, with culinary training or a culinary arts degree.
  • ServSafe Certified - Required.
  • Pass Drug Test.

Professionalism:
  • Show up to work on time every day.
  • Be prepared to report to work fit for duty, drugs and alcohol free.
  • Be a team member in the kitchen.
  • Culinary role:
    • Prepare and cook large volumes of breakfast and lunch items according to district-approved menus and standardized recipes.
    • Ensure food quality, appealing presentation, and correct portion control are maintained throughout service.
    • Monitor food temperatures continuously during preparation, holding, and serving to meet local health codes
  • Operations and management:
    • Assist and direct daily culinary operations
    • Ensure compliance with all health and safety regulations, including proper food handling, storage, preparation, and cleaning procedures.
    • Oversee inventory.
    • Maintain accurate records and reports, including daily production sheet reports for USDA programs.
  • Compliance and quality assurance:
    • Maintain proper food storage using "FIFO" (First In, First Out) rotation and labeling according to Michigan's adopted Food Code.
    • Verify nutritional value of meals served and complete appropriate state and federal reports.
    • Ensure all staff adhere to food safety (including HACCP) and sanitation guidelines. 

Qualifications
  • Relevant experience in food preparation and cooking, preferably in large quantities within an institutional setting.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with staff, administrators, students, and parents.
  • Proficiency in computer applications, including Microsoft Office (preferred) and the ability to learn Point of Sale and other relevant systems.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with others, fostering a positive work environment.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds, stand for extended periods, and perform various physical tasks associated with kitchen work.

Be prepared to work in a kitchen environment that involves prolonged standing, working in high and low temperatures, and physical labor.
Hours 7:30 AM to 2:00 PM during the school year.
