In education, they help oversee curriculum, personnel, budgeting, and daily operations within a school district. Their role is essential for smooth operations and effective communication among teams. Assistant Superintendents often step in for the Superintendent when needed and play a vital role in overall success.

What does an assistant superintendent do?

As an assistant superintendent, your job duties depend on the industry in which you work and the needs of the superintendent. You may work in a school district where you handle administrative responsibilities, develop district policy and curriculum, oversee issues related to students, and support the efforts of the district superintendent. If you work as a construction superintendent, you provide job site management of both employees and contractors. In a manufacturing assistant superintendent role, you help manage manufacturing operations by overseeing employees and performing inspections to ensure that each product or project meets required specifications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an assistant superintendent, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Assistant Superintendent, you need strong leadership, project management, and construction knowledge, often backed by a relevant degree or equivalent field experience. Familiarity with construction management software, scheduling tools like Microsoft Project or Procore, and safety certifications such as OSHA 30 are typically required. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and team coordination skills help you stand out in this role. These abilities are crucial for effectively overseeing job sites, ensuring safety and quality standards, and delivering projects on time and within budget.

What are some common challenges faced by assistant superintendents on construction sites, and how can they be managed?

Assistant Superintendents often encounter challenges such as coordinating multiple subcontractors, handling schedule changes, and ensuring site safety compliance. Managing these challenges requires strong organizational skills, clear communication, and the ability to adapt quickly to shifting project demands. Building solid relationships with both the project manager and field crews helps streamline problem-solving and keeps the project on track. Proactively addressing issues and maintaining detailed documentation are also key strategies for success in this role.

Job description

Tigard-Tualatin School District seeks its next Assistant Superintendent
The Tigard-Tualatin School District seeks a visionary leader to help guide our diverse, highly regarded school district in the Portland metropolitan area. With 10,800 extraordinary students who call TTSD home, Tigard-Tualatin is one of Oregon’s ten largest school districts. Comprised of five distinct areas – Tigard, Tualatin, Durham, Metzger, and King City – our residents provide steady support, as evidenced by the recent passage of a $421M bond measure in May 2025. Our communities have won multiple awards for livability, and families settle here because of our schools’ strong reputation. TTSD is large enough to provide a comprehensive academic program but small enough to maintain close connections to staff, students, parents, and the public. This is a destination district, both for families and employees.

The Assistant Superintendent is a key member of Superintendent Iton Udosenata’s leadership team, reporting directly to the Superintendent. We seek a visionary, strategic, student-centered, equity-focused and empathetic leader. Our newest teammate will be a skillful leader with deep instructional knowledge who demonstrates integrity and respect for others, and who understands when to listen and when to provide direction. The role includes overseeing the academic core of the organization and serving as the superintendent’s top advisor.

If you are mission-driven, inspired to make a difference, and excited about serving the needs of students of all backgrounds, we welcome you to explore this opportunity. Experience working in communities with linguistic diversity, particularly Spanish-speaking communities, is of high value in this search. Salary range is from $197,000-$203,000 with the employee portion of PERS (Oregon’s public employee retirement plan) paid for by the district, and a TSA of approximately $9000/yr.

For top consideration, please apply no later than December 4.
