Employment Status: Full-Time, 12-Month Position
Position Summary
The Assistant Superintendent serves as a key member of the division's executive leadership team and assists the Superintendent in providing strategic leadership, organizational management, and oversight of division operations. This position supports the development and implementation of the division's vision, mission, strategic plan, and educational initiatives while promoting student achievement, operational excellence, and continuous improvement.. The Assistant Superintendent works collaboratively with principals, department leaders, teachers, staff, families, and community stakeholders to ensure the effective delivery of instructional programs and operational services.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assists the Superintendent in implementing the School Board's vision, goals, and policies.
  • Serves as acting Superintendent in the Superintendent's absence.
  • Participates in strategic planning and division improvement initiatives.
  • Provides leadership that promotes high academic achievement and organizational effectiveness.
  • Advises the Superintendent on division operations, policies, and emerging educational issues.
  • Provides leadership in all matters of curriculum, instruction, and assessment that impact students, teachers, and administrators
  • Serves as Division Director of Testing (DDOT)
  • Leads the development, administration, implementation, and monitoring of federal, state, and local grants, ensuring compliance with funding requirements and alignment with division priorities
  • Assesses strengths and needs within the schools' programs and provides guidance, support, and professional development to strengthen staff capacity
  • Collaborates with division leadership to ensure comprehensive vertical and horizontal alignment of the PreK12 program
  • Directs the development and revision of curriculum maps, assessments, and instructional materials
  • Supports teachers and administrators through consultation, collaboration, and coaching to implement effective instructional strategies and interventions that increase student achievement
  • Coordinates the division's summer school programming
  • Leads the school improvement process
  • Models effective data-driven decision-making and assists principals in analyzing and using student achievement data
  • Provides leadership, oversight, and compliance for division operations, including transportation, facilities, maintenance, and school safety, with local, state, and federal regulations
  • Collaborates with principals and department leaders to address operational needs that impact teaching and learning
  • Provides guidance and support to principals in the implementation of the teacher evaluation process, including observations, feedback, and performance improvement
  • Assists in the preparation and management of the budget
  • Prepares, manages, and monitors various grants
  • Reviews, develops, and recommends policies
  • Continuously assesses division policies and practices to ensure alignment with educational trends, legislative requirements, and the division's vision
  • Maintains positive relationships with staff, students, families, and stakeholders
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  1. Extensive knowledge of the principles, concepts and methodologies of public school administration, instructional and support programs and the organizational structure of the public school division
  2. Extensive knowledge of related federal, state and local statutes, regulations and policies.
  3. Extensive knowledge of student assessment to include, but not limited to: Virginia SOL's, SAT, ACT, and alternative assessments
  4. Extensive knowledge of curriculum design, development and implementation
  5. Extensive knowledge of management and leadership principles and practices
  6. Extensive knowledge of budget management, strategic planning, policy development and the processes that effectively engage stakeholder groups on important issues
  7. Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive situations and information
  8. Demonstrated problem solving, decision-making and leadership skills; ability to analyze data, summarize, and present alternatives to the Superintendent and School Board
  9. Demonstrated ability to coordinate and integrate various instructional programs and to communicate effectively
  10. Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships; motivate and inspire employees and community stakeholders
  11. Ability to plan, supervise, and evaluate professional and clerical personnel

Qualifications:
Education
  • Master's Degree in School Administration; Doctorate preferred
  • Valid Virginia Educator's Professional Certificate

Experience
  • Minimum of six years of successful school or division-level administrative experience
  • Experience as a principal is required
  • Demonstrated experience in instructional leadership
  • Demonstrated experience in organizational management
  • Demonstrated skill in supervision and evaluation
  • Demonstrated skill in oral and written communication

Physical Requirements:
Work requires normal physical attributes required for walking, standing, sitting, operating office equipment, communication equipment, lifting, moving, carrying light equipment, supplies, etc.
Work Environment:
The Assistant Superintendent works primarily in an office and school environment with frequent travel throughout the division. Evening and weekend work may be required to attend Board meetings, community events, and division functions.
Evaluation:
Performance will be evaluated by the superintendent in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of administrative personnel.
Salary Range:
$120,250 to $146,950 per year
