Duties and Responsibilities
  • Under the immediate supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI) and senior staff, in partnership between the Hawai'i Department of Health's (DOH) Alcohol and Drug Use Division (ADAD) and Thompson School of Social Work & Public Health, assist with providing research support on projects addressing substance use within the state in order to disseminate state data in a user-friendly format
  • Systematically search and summarize surveillance and epidemiological research literature on public health topics, specifically related to substance use, addiction, morbidity, mortality, prevention and treatment
  • Assist with data abstraction, cleaning, management, coding and analyzing for large surveillance datasets, e.g., emergency department (ED) visits, hospitalization, substance use and treatment
  • Perform quantitative and qualitative data analyses related to various health indicators related to substance use, Under guidance of the PI and other senior program staff,
  • Support the development, writing, and formatting of abstracts, manuscripts, presentations, and reports
  • Present results graphically and in text to local stakeholder and funders for use in reports, conference presentations, and publications
  • Attend weekly team meetings
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications
  • Classified, full-time graduate student in epidemiology, public health, psychology, economics, computer science, social work, public policy, or related field at the University of Hawaii Manoa.
  • Be in good academic standing and maintain a GPA of 3.0 or above
  • Familiarity with research through previous coursework and/or work experience
  • Proficient with statistical software e.g., R, SPSS, SAS, Stata or Tableau
  • Ability to work independently and manage time across multiple research tasks
  • Strong oral and written communication skills

Desirable Qualifications
  • A doctoral student at the University of Hawaii
  • Demonstrated strong background in substance use research, including intervention, treatment, and prevention science, with the ability to apply coursework and research experience to support ongoing projects.
  • Knowledge of epidemiology or statistics as evidenced by coursework and/or experience
  • Experience with secondary data analyses
  • Strong command of statistical software i.e., R, SPSS, SAS, Stata or Tableau.
  • Demonstrated experience preparing research reports, policy briefs, and/or scientific publications, data presentations and data visualizations
  • Previous experience with state or federally funded projects
