Job description

SUMMARY

The Software Engineer I is an entry-level role responsible for contributing to the design, development, testing, and support of software applications. This position works under the guidance of senior engineers and managers to implement defined features, resolve defects, and maintain existing systems. The Software Engineer I develops foundational engineering skills while learning established patterns, tools, and processes used by the Engineering team.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Contribute to the design, development, testing, and support of applications under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Write and maintain SQL queries and reports with review and guidance.
  • Collaborate with Quality Assurance to test changes, identify defects, and maintain system stability.
  • Participate in requirement discussions and technical reviews with guidance from senior engineers or managers.
  • Document code changes, technical designs, and troubleshooting steps to support team collaboration and future maintenance.
  • Debug existing implementations and assist in resolving assigned trouble tickets, escalating issues as appropriate.
  • Participate in code reviews to learn best practices and improve code quality.
  • Perform other duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS

  • B.S. in computer science, mathematics, or related technical discipline; equivalent work experience will be considered in lieu of a degree
  • Foundational understanding of software engineering principles, including basic analysis, design, and implementation concepts.
  • Proficiency in at least one object-oriented programming language (such as Java or C#), with the ability and willingness to learn additional languages and technologies.
  • Familiarity with writing and maintaining simple graphical user interface (GUI) applications and basic algorithms.
  • Basic experience debugging, testing, and maintaining existing software applications.
  • Exposure to common development and testing tools such as Integrated Development Environments (IDEs), source control systems, database query tools, and unit testing frameworks.
  • Ability to follow established processes, accept feedback, and apply learning to improve technical and professional skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively within a team environment.
  • Basic understanding of relational databases and foundational SQL concepts (e.g., SELECT statements, joins, filtering), with the ability to learn and apply SQL in a practical environment.
