Assistant Shift Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an assistant shift engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Assistant Shift Engineer, you need a solid understanding of mechanical and electrical systems, typically supported by a relevant engineering diploma or degree. Familiarity with maintenance management systems, PLCs, and safety protocols is commonly required, and certifications in areas like HVAC or boiler operation can be advantageous. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are vital soft skills for this role. These skills and qualifications ensure reliable plant operations, quick response to technical issues, and safe, efficient workflow during each shift.

How does an assistant shift engineer typically interact with other team members during a shift?

As an Assistant Shift Engineer, you will work closely with senior engineers, technicians, and operations staff to monitor equipment performance and address any technical issues that arise during your shift. Collaboration is key, as you'll often coordinate maintenance activities, communicate equipment status, and provide updates to the shift supervisor. You'll also participate in shift handover meetings to ensure seamless transitions and maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, fostering a team-oriented environment focused on safety and efficiency.

What is an assistant shift engineer?

Assistant Shift Engineers are entry-level professionals who support the operation and maintenance of technical systems in facilities such as power plants, manufacturing sites, or large buildings. They assist senior engineers during their assigned shifts to ensure smooth and efficient functioning of equipment and machinery. Typical duties include monitoring systems, performing routine inspections, troubleshooting issues, and keeping detailed logs of operational data. Their role is crucial in preventing downtime and maintaining safety standards within the facility.

What is the difference between Assistant Shift Engineer vs Maintenance Technician?

AspectAssistant Shift EngineerMaintenance Technician
CredentialsDiploma or degree in engineering or technical field, relevant certificationsTechnical diploma or certification in maintenance or technical trades
Work EnvironmentIndustrial plants, factories, power stations, operating machineryFacilities, equipment, machinery maintenance in various industries
Employer & Industry UsagePower plants, manufacturing, utilities, engineering firmsManufacturing, facilities management, industrial sectors

Assistant Shift Engineers and Maintenance Technicians both work in industrial environments, often sharing similar certifications and work settings. The main difference is that Assistant Shift Engineers typically have more responsibilities related to overseeing operations and assisting in engineering tasks, while Maintenance Technicians focus primarily on repairing and maintaining equipment. Both roles are essential for smooth plant operations, but Assistant Shift Engineers usually have a broader scope of duties involving operational oversight.

Job description

About the Team:

The Engine Manufacturing team is dedicated to delivering high-performance engines and advancing innovative manufacturing systems that continuously improve cost, quality, and lead time. You're not just executing on designs; you actively provide input that shapes new hardware iterations and regularly interface with engineers to make critical decisions for the Aeon R program. Having successfully developed and refined processes for our initial development engines, the team is now focused on producing flight engines at rate for Terran R's aggressive launch manifest.

*note* First shift hours are 6am - 3pm

About the Role:

  • Own the AeonR integrated assembly from design release to integration to shipment. This will include developing the build process to meet production targets and reduce build issues.
  • Develop processes and specs that directly impact the production rate of AeonR engines.
  • Support production as needed to deliver engines by resolving build issues, receiving and implementing technician feedback, supporting BOM updates and build checkouts.
  • Support work center development by considering assembly operations, tooling and capital equipment requirements, and rate targets. You will also support engine work center development across sites.
  • Author test procedures and act as test conductor to verify as-installed hardware health and build integrity.
  • Assist with developing the business tools and processes that will be used to manufacture the first launch vehicle. In parallel, help to define and pilot the long-term ERP, MES, and QMS solutions that will enable high-quality, efficient vehicle manufacturing.

About You:

  • Degree in engineering or related technical field and 2+ years of relevant experience
  • Strong communication skills, and ability to write detailed work instructions and process plans
  • Ability to effectively investigate, resolve and screen hardware non-conformances
  • Ability to work with and train technicians
  • Ability to work with vendors to get parts made quickly and reliably
  • Familiarity with Additive Manufacturing, Subtractive Manufacturing and associated precision inspection techniques

Nice to haves but not required:

  • Experience leading a small team
  • Experience in a startup or agile development environment
  • Experience working in a propulsion development program
