What does an assistant robotics engineer do?

An Assistant Robotics Engineer supports the design, development, and testing of robotic systems and components. They assist senior engineers in building prototypes, running simulations, troubleshooting issues, and maintaining technical documentation. Their responsibilities often include programming, assembling hardware, and ensuring that robotic systems meet performance and safety standards. This entry-level role provides valuable hands-on experience in robotics engineering projects and is a common stepping stone to more advanced engineering positions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an assistant robotics engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Assistant Robotics Engineer, you need a solid background in robotics, mechanical or electrical engineering, and programming languages like C++, Python, or ROS, typically supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with CAD software, embedded systems, and robotic simulation tools, as well as certifications such as Certified Robotics Engineer, are commonly required. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and clear communication skills help you collaborate effectively and resolve technical issues. These competencies are crucial for designing, testing, and improving robotic systems in a rapidly evolving technological field.

What are some common challenges assistant robotics engineers face when transitioning from academic projects to industry roles?

Assistant Robotics Engineers often find the transition from academic projects to industry roles challenging due to stricter project timelines, greater emphasis on practical implementation, and collaborative development environments. In industry, engineers must balance innovation with reliability, adhere to industry standards, and work closely with interdisciplinary teams such as software developers, mechanical engineers, and project managers. Effective communication and adaptability are crucial, as projects may pivot based on client feedback or evolving requirements. Additionally, gaining familiarity with proprietary tools and large-scale systems integration is often necessary.

Job description

About the Team
DoorDash Labs is an independent team within DoorDash. We explore robotics and automation to transform last-mile logistics in the long term. If you have a passion for applying robotics solutions in a service used by millions of people, then we want to talk to you!
About the Role
You will be a valuable and developing member of the Service Operations team at DoorDash Labs. You will build on your existing technical skills to perform diagnostic, maintenance, and repair work to keep our robot fleet and electric bicycles operating at peak performance, supporting our fleet utilization goals. You will work closely with Senior Service Technicians and your manager to expand your troubleshooting skills, gain deeper familiarity with our systems, and progressively take on more complex repairs. This is an on-site role with expectations of 100% in-office presence in Sunnyvale, CA.
You're excited about this opportunity because you will...
  • Perform standard and intermediate Service Technician tasks with growing independence, including service and upkeep of robotic systems and electric bicycles.
  • Repair common faults in robotic platforms, modular components, electric bicycle drivetrains, and support vehicles using established troubleshooting procedures.
  • Assist with complex or unusual faults alongside senior or lead technicians to learn advanced diagnostic methods for both robotic systems and e-bikes.
  • Complete repairs on electrical systems, control units, battery packs, and hardware under guidance, with opportunities to develop toward independent advanced repairs.
  • Use and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and diagnostic flowcharts to guide your work, applying these resources to both robot and electric bicycle service tasks.
  • Document all diagnostic steps, repair actions, and component failures in the service management system to maintain accurate records and support fleet readiness.
  • Learn from and collaborate with experienced technicians, accepting mentorship and applying feedback to improve your skills across multiple vehicle types.
  • Follow preventive maintenance schedules and procedures to reduce downtime and extend the life of fleet equipment, including battery care for both robots and e-bikes.

We operate 7 days a week, 16 hrs a day to support Robot Operations. During training, you will be on a temporary schedule until your on-the-job training is completed over a few weeks. Once training is complete in Dublin, CA, you will move to your permanent shift assignment that will be based on business need, either an AM or PM shift with weekend coverage. To ensure you can plan accordingly, permanent shift reassignments are provided with at least two weeks' notice.
We're excited about you because you have...
  • 1+ year of service work experience
  • Curiosity and an inclination for all things mechanical and repair
  • Strong communication and documentation skills
  • Prior experience in vehicle, bicycle, or fleet service (especially for electric or autonomous vehicles), robotics, or aircraft is a major plus
  • Experience with JIRA, MaintainX, and other service tools and systems is a major plus
  • Valid U.S. drivers license required and a successful completion of MVR required
