Job description

Reports to: Foreman and Civil Superintendent
FLSA: Non-Exempt
JOB SUMMARY:
Equipment operators are responsible for operating heavy equipment for all civil operations in a safe and productive manner. Equipment operators must take care of their equipment on a daily basis, this includes: equipment walk arounds, reporting of maintenance needed, greasing, maintaining all fluids, fueling, and cleaning the equipment. Operators are not just limited to seat time, operators will be required to help out the crew in other aspects as needed. This includes but is not limited to pumping, working with hand tools, helping with measurements/shooting grade, and occasional labor.
REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
Core Duties / Responsibilities:
  • Operate equipment in a safe and productive manner.
  • Coordination with foreman and site superintendent on daily tasks and production goals.
  • Safety of all site personnel; operators must be aware of their surroundings.
  • Treating equipment with care and avoiding damage to equipment as well as damage to existing conditions and new
  • site improvements.
  • Daily sketch tickets and being aware of existing utilities both underground and overhead.
  • Working around existing utilities in a safe manner.
  • Safely working with other equipment operators on project specific tasks.
  • Equipment care and maintenance, daily equipment walkarounds and coordinating any maintenance with foreman or superintendent.
  • Must understand and utilize lockout tagout procedures.
  • Must wear PPE and always maintain wearing PPE (Hardhat, safety glasses, vest, closed toe boots) when exiting machinery.
  • Unloading material deliveries in a safe manner without damaging the material delivered.
  • Proper rigging techniques and rigging inspection - If new rigging is needed, notify foreman & superintendent immediately and remove faulty rigging from project.
  • Use of trench boxes and understanding trench safety.
  • Majority of time will be spent in operating equipment; however, you will be required to assist ground crews with physically demanding tasks as needed.

Education / Experience/Requirements:
  • Valid Driver License - this position may be required to drive on company time
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience operating either a loader or excavator
  • Experience using trench safety & shoring
  • Experience in laying utilities (Water, sanitary sewer, & storm sewer)

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:
  • Ability to read survey staking
  • Ability to read and understand project drawings per scope of work

  • Must have the ability to remain in a standing or kneeling position. 90%
  • Must have the ability to speak, write and comprehend English language. 25%
  • Must have the ability to lift tools and supplies, up to 50 lbs. 40%
  • Must have the ability to hear clearly. 100%

  • Must have dexterity to utilize and manipulate tools and materials. 100%
