Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant - Duke Rheumatology Clinics

APPs are expected to work to top of scope in order to contribute to Duke's missions which include clinical practice, education, and research. Practice locations can include Duke Health's three hospitals or over 140 primary care and specialty care clinics throughout North Carolina.

Job Location Duke Rheumatology Clinics in Durham, Raleigh, and Cary, NC

Job Summary The Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant with the Duke Rheumatology Clinics is involved in a training program designed to learn the specialty of rheumatology. The length of training will be based on prior APP experience, with new graduates and experienced APPs encouraged to apply. The PA or NP are credentialed as full members of the medical team and are involved in all aspects of preventative, diagnostic, and therapeutic care to rheumatology patients. The APP will attend lectures, seminars, and laboratories and participate in clinical, hands-on patient care with appropriate oversight by the supervising physician. Primary hours will be Monday through Friday, day shift, with hours flexible to meet the needs of the patients. Upon completion of training the position consist of 8 half-day clinic sessions working at one or more of the Duke Rheumatology Clinics with 2 half-day administrative sessions per week.

Job Duties & Responsibilities Attend lectures, seminars, and laboratories that have been designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the pathophysiology of various disease processes. Instruction will cover both general and subspecialty topics. Emphasis will be placed on didactic and clinical training in rheumatology which will allow the APP to gain more autonomy as they master evaluation skills, knowledge of disease processes, and become competent in all procedures necessary to practice in rheumatology. In addition to classroom/laboratory instruction, the clinical curriculum will include attendance at weekly rounds, Grand Rounds, D&C Conference and other conferences organized by the designated department. Prepare for clinical rotations by rounding with the healthcare team and becoming familiar with the routine of the clinical practice. Continued professional development through participation in CME, Grand Rounds, and monthly departmental staff and APP meetings is expected following the training period. Clinical curriculum duties will include history and physical examinations, writing patient orders and progress notes, responding to and evaluating patient problems, ordering diagnostic studies, and could also include performing invasive procedures with appropriate competence checks and oversight by the supervising physician and/or designated back-up physicians. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Job Eligibility Requirements Education Nurse Practitioners: Work requires completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program, with a Master's degree in Nursing. Physician Assistants: Work requires completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program. A Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree strongly preferred. Certification ACLS preferred. BLS required. License Nurse Practitioners: Must have current or compact RN licensure & NP approval to practice in the state of North Carolina. BLS required. National certification as a NP required. Physician Assistants: Must be licensed in the state of NC, and be certified as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. BLS required. Experience New graduates and experienced APPs are encouraged to apply.
