Title and Position Information

Working Title: Medical Hematologist/Oncologist

Number of Vacancies: 1

Location: Division of Health Affairs

Appointment Period: 1 year

Scope of Job

Provide clinical expertise in patient care management and an appropriate teaching environment for fellows, residents, and students. Practice clinical cancer medicine in an exemplary manner in standards set forth by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners, and the American College of Physicians, properly balanced with other academic activities. Must be capable of providing complete and thorough history and physical patient examinations. Must be able to perform invasive procedures as dictated by the physician’s subspecialty. This may require standing, bending, stooping, lifting, hearing, manual dexterity, and clear and concise verbal communications.

Develop and maintain a clinical practice for patients referred to UT Health RGV. Provide physician staffing for the out‑patient clinic and in‑patient services at a level commensurate with that which would be provided by other Oncology staff/internists with the same level of training and experience. Serve as a role‑model practitioner for faculty, fellows, residents, and students.

Actively engage in clinical research and scholarly activities to enhance the academic environment. Develop programs of clinical research and scholarly activities as assigned. May necessitate instructing, through written or verbal communication, research support personnel in protocol implementation. Seek appropriate funding mechanisms to support clinical research.

Minimum Qualifications
  • MD degree in Internal Medicine with Board Certification in hematology, oncology or hematology & oncology.
  • Must possess or be eligible for a Texas Medical License and qualified for an appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor at an LCME accredited medical school.
Discipline Specific Required Qualifications

Completed an accredited hematology, oncology or hematology & oncology fellowship.

Preferred Qualifications

At least 1 year post completion of fellowship training.

UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
