General Description:
The Junior Broadcast Director works as part of the directing team to deliver live and non live programming using broadcast automation technology. Operating primarily in a Co Director role (but also directing some programs), they support the Automation Broadcast Director to ensure programs are delivered cleanly, accurately, and in line with editorial intent and channel guidelines. Working closely with Production, Newsroom, and Technical teams, the role focuses on operating the automation system, checking rundowns, maintaining on air quality, and responding quickly to issues in a live environment. As a developing director, the Assistant Broadcast Director gains experience by supporting senior colleagues, with progression toward more complex directing assignments.
Essential Job Functions:
- Operate the production automation system (Vizrt Mosart) in a Co Director capacity across all programming, including prime time and special events.
- Direct some programming, including non prime time and overnight programming as experience develops.
- Assist in the smooth running of live and non live control rooms and studios.
- Manage the automation GUI, monitoring workflows and identifying issues while on air.
- Support preparation and checking of NCS running orders to ensure accurate delivery.
- Coordinate control room line ups, studio checks, and outside source line ups with the Broadcast Automation Director.
- Anticipate production or technical challenges and assist in resolving them quickly.
- Facilitate ad hoc on air requirements using automation tools.
- Maintain program continuity, established formats, and workflow standards.
- Carry out on air quality control including audio, graphics, lighting, and robotic cameras.
- Work professionally with editorial teams, talent, and technical staff.
- Follow broadcast operations protocols, health & safety practices, and departmental procedures.
- Support training and development of other Assistant Broadcast Directors.
- To undertake any other reasonable duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
- 2 years of control room and studio experience is required; experience in an automated control room environment preferred.
- Calm composed operator able to perform effectively under pressure.
- Strong interest in directing automated live television output.
- Working knowledge of control room production components including cameras, sound, lighting, and graphics.
- Ability to collaborate with editorial and operational teams while responding decisively to change.
- Good understanding of world news and live broadcast environments.
- Willingness to work shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and timekeeping skills.
- Solid understanding of health and safety in broadcast operations.
