Sumter Local Government Consulting is pleased to be assisting Stockbridge, GA, in conducting a recruitment for their next Assistant Public Works Director.
The City of Stockbridge is part of the rapidly growing Atlanta metropolitan area and sits within Henry County. The city is a thriving and strategically positioned community just20 miles south of downtown Atlantaand a short12-mile drive from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport,the world's busiest airport. Its strong residential base, excellent workforce pipeline, and expanding commercial sector position the city as a premier destination for economic development and investment.
The City operates under a Mayor-Council-City Manager form of government that blends strong elected leadership with professional administrative management. The Mayor and five City Council members, all elected at-large by the residents of Stockbridge, provide policy direction, adopt ordinances, set strategic priorities, and approve the annual municipal budget.
The City of Stockbridge is seeking a forward-thinking, highly skilled Assistant Public Works Director to support the city's continued growth and help maintain high-quality infrastructure and services for the community. Reporting to the Public Works Director, this key leadership role assists in overseeing daily operations, planning, and execution of public works programs, ensuring efficient service delivery and long-term sustainability of the city's assets.
The Assistant Director will play a central role in managing core functions such as streets, stormwater, fleet, facilities, and capital improvement projects. This position helps coordinate maintenance activities, supports project planning and implementation, and ensures compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. The role also involves working closely with contractors, engineers, and other departments to deliver projects on time and within budget.
The Ideal Candidate
• Self-starter who is comfortable working in a fast-paced municipal operations environment
• Effective communicator with strong written and verbal skills, capable of preparing reports, updates, and presentations for the Public Works Director, City Manager, Council, and stakeholders
• Hands-on, solutions-oriented leader who can work effectively with field crews, department staff, contractors, residents, and partner agencies
• Experience supporting or managing public works operations, capital projects, infrastructure maintenance, streets, stormwater, facilities, fleet, right-of-way, or related municipal services
• Ability to solve problems, exercise sound independent judgment, and make timely operational recommendations
• Working knowledge of public works standards, construction practices, permitting, procurement, budgeting, safety practices, and regulatory compliance
• Ability to review plans, coordinate inspections, monitor project schedules, and support delivery of infrastructure and maintenance projects
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities, service requests, emergency response needs, and project timelines
• Contributes to the profession and actively engages in professional development
• A commitment to professionalism, integrity, accountability, teamwork, and public service is essential
Salary
The hiring range for this position is from $100,000 - $108,458.
