Assistant Prototype Model Shop information

What is an assistant prototype model shop?

Assistant Prototype Model Shop jobs involve supporting the creation and assembly of prototypes and models, often for engineering, design, or manufacturing purposes. Individuals in this role typically help with tasks such as preparing materials, operating basic machinery, maintaining tools, and assisting senior technicians or model makers. They may also be responsible for keeping the work area organized and ensuring projects stay on schedule. These positions require attention to detail, manual dexterity, and the ability to follow instructions closely. The role is an entry point for those interested in model making, engineering, or product design.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an assistant prototype model shop?

To thrive as an Assistant Prototype Model Shop, you need strong mechanical aptitude, hands-on fabrication skills, and familiarity with prototyping processes, often supported by a technical diploma or relevant experience. Proficiency with tools such as CNC machines, 3D printers, and CAD software, along with safety certifications, is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help individuals collaborate and adapt to evolving project demands. These skills ensure accurate prototype creation, efficient workflow, and safe, high-quality output in a fast-paced development environment.

What are some common challenges faced by an assistant prototype model shop employee, and how can they be overcome?

Assistant Prototype Model Shop employees often encounter challenges such as tight project deadlines, adapting to evolving design requirements, and working with unfamiliar materials or fabrication techniques. To overcome these challenges, it's important to maintain strong communication with engineers and designers, be proactive in seeking clarification on project specifications, and continually develop hands-on skills through on-the-job learning. Collaborating closely with team members and staying organized can also help ensure prototypes are completed accurately and efficiently.

What is the difference between Assistant Prototype Model Shop vs Prototype Model Maker?

AspectAssistant Prototype Model ShopPrototype Model Maker
CredentialsHigh school diploma or equivalent; technical trainingTechnical training or certification in model making
Work EnvironmentManufacturing or workshop setting, assisting senior staffWorkshop or studio, creating detailed prototypes
Employer & IndustryAutomotive, aerospace, product design companiesSimilar industries, often working independently or in teams
Primary ResponsibilitiesSupporting model making tasks, preparing materialsBuilding, assembling, and finishing prototype models

The Assistant Prototype Model Shop role primarily involves supporting and assisting senior model makers in a workshop environment, focusing on preparation and support tasks. In contrast, Prototype Model Makers are responsible for creating detailed, finished prototypes. Both roles require technical skills and industry experience, but the Model Maker role involves more hands-on creation and craftsmanship.

Job description

Envisioneering is seeking an experienced Machinist to support defense related programs by programming, setting up, and operating CNC equipment to produce high precision prototype components. This is an excellent opportunity to be a part of a design team and assist with product design and development. This role demands advanced CNC programming expertise, strong fabrication skills, and the ability to work closely within a small, interdisciplinary design and engineering team.

The machinist provides critical feedback during product development, supports rapid prototyping cycles, and ensures manufacturability of designs intended for defense applications. A successful candidate demonstrates exceptional craftsmanship, attention to security and quality standards, and the ability to adapt quickly in a fast paced R&D environment. SUMMARY DESCRIPTION: Develop, edit, and optimize CNC programs for complex components using Solidworks.

Set up, operate, and troubleshoot CNC mills, lathes, and multiaxis machining centers. Desired experience in Haas and Tormach 3-axis and 5-axis. Fabricate precision prototype parts from engineering concepts, CAD models, and evolving design requirements.

Read and interpret detailed engineering drawings, GD&T, and defensegrade documentation standards. Select appropriate tooling, fixturing, speeds, and feeds for both prototyping and lowrate initial production. Perform firstarticle inspections, dimensional verification, and quality checks using standard metrology tools and CMM equipment.

Collaborate closely within a small design and development team to provide manufacturability input, evaluate design feasibility, and support iterative prototyping. Contribute to product development cycles by machining test articles, prototypes, and experimental components. Maintain accurate records, adhere to security and confidentiality requirements, and follow all defense industry quality protocols.

Conduct preventative maintenance and ensure proper operation of machine tools and shop equipment. Support continuous improvement efforts related to machining processes, tooling, and workflow.PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Ability to stand for extended periods and lift moderate weight (typically 25-50 lbs). Comfortable working in a machine shop environment with noise, coolant, and industrial equipment

Ability to follow all safety regulations and maintain a clean, organized workspace. MINIMUM SKILLS/ QUALIFICATIONS: DoD Secret Clearance that is active or was active within the 24 months prior to date of hire. Top Secret preferred.

Advanced CNC programming and parts fabrication. Demonstrated expertise in CNC programming. Desired skill specifically with Autodesk FeaturesCAM.

Solidworks. Strong background in prototype machining, R&D support, or defense/aerospace machining environments. Ability to interpret complex technical drawings, GD&T, and evolving design requirements common in defense programs.

Skilled in precision measurement techniques and accurate use of inspection equipment. Strong mechanical reasoning, problemsolving skills, and ability to work independently with minimal oversight. Experience troubleshooting machining issues related to precision tolerances, exotic materials, and specialized tooling.

DESIRED SKILLS: Proficiency operating other common machine shop equipment: manual lathes, drill press, band saws, surface grinders, bending/brake machines, and related tools. Basic understanding of welding (MIG, TIG, or brazing) for prototyping and fixture fabrication. Experience with CAD/CAM modeling, toolpath simulation, and smallscale fixture or jig design.

Experience with assembly of electromechanical systems. SALARY RANGE: $70,000 - $110,000 BENEFITS: Envisioneering, Inc. offers a stable work environment, a competitive salary, and a comprehensive benefits package including 401k (immediate vesting), Medical/Dental/Vision, FSA, Short Term, Long Term, AD&D and Life insurance, (employer paid), voluntary life, Tuition Reimbursement, Paid Leave, Holidays and much more.
