Senior Accountant Job Description


The Senior Accountant plays a key role in supporting the accuracy, timeliness, and integrity of Plantscape Inc. financial information. This full-time, onsite position works closely with and reports directly to the Controller, providing experienced support across general ledger accounting, month-end close, account reconciliations, financial reporting, analysis, and special projects. The position is intended for an experienced accounting professional who can work independently, research and resolve discrepancies, prepare work for Controller review, and help strengthen accounting processes as the department continues to evolve.

Senior Accountant Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Controller with month-end and year-end close activities and help maintain an organized close process
  • Prepare and post recurring, adjusting, and other journal entries with appropriate supporting documentation under the Controller’s direction
  • Prepare monthly general ledger and balance sheet account reconciliations and investigate reconciling items
  • Prepare and maintain month-end schedules, supporting workpapers, and other recurring accounting documentation
  • Support fixed asset, lease, inventory, and other balance sheet accounting schedules and related reconciliations
  • Prepare documentation and supporting schedules for external audits and assist with audit requests under the Controller’s direction
  • Support the transition of financial data and accounting processes to new or upgraded systems, including the upcoming transition to a cloud-based environment
  • Cross-train as backup for critical accounting functions, which may include accounts payable, payroll, billing, and other departmental processes
  • Maintain complete, accurate, organized, and confidential financial records and supporting documentation
  • Participate in departmental meetings as needed
  • Perform additional accounting duties, special projects, and responsibilities as assigned by the Controller and President

  • Demonstrated experience with general ledger accounting, month-end close, journal entries, and account reconciliations is required
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field strongly preferred; equivalent relevant accounting experience will be considered
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of GAAP requirements is required
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, strong working knowledge of Word and Outlook, and familiarity with SharePoint is a plus
  • Strong understanding of accrual accounting, financial statements, and balance sheet account relationships
  • Exceptional attention to detail, organization, accuracy, and time-management abilities
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and recurring deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Self-directed, adaptable, and able to learn new accounting systems and software quickly
  • Discreet and trustworthy when handling payroll, financial, employee, and other confidential information
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively across departments

Physical Requirements:

This position spends considerable time at a desk using a computer and frequently utilizes standard office equipment such as computers, printers, and scanners. The position moves throughout the office as needed and may occasionally lift or move objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
