Job description

Position Summary

The Swiss Lathe Setup Programmer is responsible for programming, setting up, troubleshooting, and optimizing Swiss-style CNC lathes to produce precision machined components that meet quality, productivity, and safety standards. This position works closely with engineering, quality, and production teams to ensure efficient manufacturing processes and continuous improvement of machining operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Program, set up, and operate Swiss-style CNC lathes (Citizen, Star, Tsugami, Tornos, or similar).
  • Create and edit CNC programs using G-code and CAM software.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, blueprints, and process specifications.
  • Select tooling, cutting parameters, work holding, and machine configurations for optimal performance.
  • Perform first-piece inspections and make machine adjustments to ensure dimensional accuracy.
  • Troubleshoot machining, tooling, and equipment issues to minimize downtime.
  • Optimize cycle times and manufacturing processes while maintaining part quality.
  • Conduct machine setup changeovers and verify program readiness for production.
  • Monitor production runs and provide technical support to operators.
  • Maintain accurate setup sheets, tooling records, and process documentation.
  • Utilize precision measuring equipment such as micrometers, calipers, optical comparators, and CMMs.
  • Collaborate with engineering and quality departments on process improvements and corrective actions.
  • Follow all safety procedures, quality standards, and company policies.
  • Assist in training machine operators and junior machinists as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; technical or trade school education preferred.
  • 3+ years of experience programming and setting up Swiss-style CNC lathes.
  • Strong knowledge of G-code programming and CNC machining principles.
  • Experience with Swiss machines specifically Citizen and Star.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and GD&T requirements.
  • Proficiency with precision measuring instruments and inspection methods.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Basic computer skills and experience with manufacturing software systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with CAM software such as Esprit, Mastercam, PartMaker, or GibbsCAM.
  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Experience with live tooling, sub-spindles, guide bushing applications, and complex Swiss machining operations.
  • CMM programming or advanced inspection experience.
  • Industry certifications in CNC machining or manufacturing technology.
