Assistant Professors typically hold a doctorate and engage in both teaching and research at universities. Lecturers usually focus on teaching, often with less emphasis on research, and may have different credential requirements. While both roles are found in academic settings, Assistant Professors often have more responsibilities related to research and academic advancement.
An assistant professor is an entry-level university teaching position below that of associate professor and full professor. You can find work as an assistant professor in any department at a college or university. Assistant professorships fall into either tenure-track and non-tenure track positions. Regardless of whether you are tenure or non-tenure track, your duties are similar. You conduct research, teach classes, advise students on their studies, and perform numerous administrative functions, such as attending faculty meetings and professional conferences or events.

College of Environmental Design
The mission of the College of Environmental Design (ENV) is to provide an outstanding academic and professional learning experience within a multidisciplinary structure. Established in 1970, ENV's programs have guided creative excellence, environmental sustainability, and social responsibility with award-winning professional degree programs at: the undergraduate and graduate levels in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Urban and Regional Planning; at the undergraduate level in Art History and Visual Communication Design; and at the graduate level in Regenerative Studies.
Faculty research, professional, and creative activities support student learning through the Teacher-Scholar Model. Faculty are encouraged to facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration and promote their rich talent, expertise, and influence. We seek opportunities for engagement with practice in California, nationally and internationally. As we educate future design leaders, we have an obligation to ensure that all constituencies of those professions represent the diversity of California's population. Diversity is our strength.
Department of Architecturee
The Department of Architecture (CPPARC) offers three accredited degrees: the five-year Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) program, a three-year Master of Architecture (M.Arch) program, and a two-year Master of Interior Architecture (M. Int. Arch.) program. All three degrees emphasize the integration of knowledge-based curriculum areas into the design studios. Since its founding in 1968, CPPARC's mission has been to equip students with the necessary tools to become responsible professionals, motivated by civic duty and engagement. Central to that mission is a commitment to integrative design practices essential to preparing students for professional practice and licensure. CPP's urban location at the center of the Los Angeles basin places our professional programs within a living laboratory. The region's remarkable demographic diversity, ongoing suburban densification, and expanding transit infrastructure offer students and faculty a rich context for timely research and the development of innovative design ideas and working methods.
CPPARC supports the University's teacher-scholar model, in which faculty engage in intellectual, creative, and scholarly activities that enrich both their teaching and their broader creative and scholarly interests. This model provides a platform for faculty to integrate teaching, service, and scholarship within the creative context of the region. The Department's perspectives on architectural practice are also shaped by the multicultural demographics of Southern California and the wide spectrum of creative opportunities the region affords.
The Position: Assistant Professor of Architecture
Cal Poly Pomona's Department of Architecture (CPPARC) is seeking a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of Architecture to join the faculty in Fall 2027. We are especially interested in candidates committed to advancing the discipline and profession of architecture while actively engaging in and supporting inclusivity within our diverse academic community.
The new faculty member will teach and coordinate architecture core studios (1st, 2nd, or 3rd year), upper-level elective design studios, lecture courses, and elective seminars within the B.Arch and M.Arch programs. The new faculty member will also contribute to department, college, and university operations through service, and will maintain creative and scholarly activities that inform their teaching.
We are particularly interested in candidates who can lead courses and curriculum that meet the NAAB SC.6 Building Integration requirement. This requirement ensures that students develop the ability to make design decisions within architectural projects while demonstrating integration of building envelope systems and assemblies, structural systems, environmental control systems, life safety systems, and measurable building performance outcomes.
Cal Poly Pomona Architecture is defined by its students. Many are first-generation college students, community college transfers, and individuals from diverse backgrounds pursuing a career in architecture. The department is committed to equity and inclusion in teaching and mentoring, and fosters a collegial environment where all students can thrive. The ideal candidate will recognize and build upon the distinctive strengths of our students, our community, and the university's commitment to Inclusive Excellence.
