They generally teach introductory or general education courses on various topics of physics, such as laws of matter and energy, electricity and magnetism, thermal physics, quantum physics, and mechanics. As they gain experience, they may teach higher-level courses that include condensed matter, atomic and molecular physics, biophysics, theoretical physics, and astronomy. Assistant professors of physics create syllabi for classes which outlines the term’s assignments, labs, and tests for the students. They may also participate in research projects and publish papers in industry journals.

What are the responsibilities of an assistant professor of physics?

An Assistant Professor of Physics is responsible for teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses in physics, conducting original research, publishing scholarly articles, and mentoring students. They often participate in academic committees, curriculum development, and outreach activities. Additionally, they may be involved in securing research funding and collaborating with colleagues on interdisciplinary projects. Their role is essential in advancing both education and research within the field of physics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an assistant professor of physics, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Assistant Professor of Physics, you need an advanced degree (usually a Ph.D.) in physics or a related discipline, strong research experience, and teaching credentials. Proficiency with scientific research tools, data analysis software (such as MATLAB, Python, or LabVIEW), and familiarity with learning management systems like Canvas or Blackboard is typically required. Job description

Description
Acting Assistant Professor (IQuS Senior Researcher) - University of Washington
The Department of Physics at the University of Washington invites applications for up to two IQuS Senior Researchers in the area of quantum simulation to join the InQubator for Quantum Simulation (IQuS) in the Department of Physics, beginning in Summer or Fall 2026.
IQuS brings together local researchers, long-term visiting scientists and participants of strategic-selected community-driven workshops. It helps guide basic research and co-design efforts to evolve simulations from present-day NISQ-era quantum computers to fault-tolerant/error-corrected quantum computing and simulation, and to achieve quantum advantages in fundamental physics. IQuS Senior Researchers work with faculty, postdocs, graduate students and undergraduate students whose current activities include fundamental and applied aspects of quantum information science, simulations of dynamics and thermalization in quantum field theories and quantum many-body systems using quantum devices, and the study of quantum complexity in quantum systems. They are encouraged to develop related independent research activities. We have collaborations with scientists at national laboratories, technology companies and startups, as well as researchers associated with the umbrella Quantum-X at UW and the Northwest Quantum Nexus. Further information about our research can be found at https://iqus.uw.edu/
An Acting Assistant Professor is annually renewable for up to four consecutive years, contingent upon continued funding. This is a full-time 9-month position (per year) and is not eligible for tenure. IQuS is committed to funding this position for 12 months annually, including 3 months of summer support each year. The base full-time equivalent salary range for this position will be $82,000 - $86,000 per annum, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
Qualifications
Successful applicants will have a PhD (or foreign equivalent) and two or more years postdoctoral experience in quantum information science, and/or fundamental physics and/or quantum computing and simulation, or related fields.
Application Instructions
Applications should include a cover letter, CV, a statement of research interests, a statement describing the applicant's experience, and three letters of recommendation. Review of applications will begin December 15, 2025. Please direct all inquiries to facsrch@uw.edu.
