Assistant Professor of Catalan and Spanish Studies Mission Statement

Job Summary

The Department of Romance Languages and Literatures at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, invites applications for the Ribas Family Early Career Professorship in Catalan and Romance Languages and Cultures, a tenure‐track position at the rank of Assistant Professor. This endowed position will expand the Department’s strengths in Romance languages, literatures, and cultures through a primary specialization in Catalan Studies, while contributing to the department’s broader intellectual and curricular mission across the Romance languages.

We seek a dynamic scholar whose research and teaching engage Catalan language, literature, and culture in a broad and innovative manner. We especially welcome candidates whose work places Catalan Studies in conversation with one or more of the following: comparative and transnational approaches, Iberian Studies, Mediterranean Studies, migration and diaspora, race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, colonial and postcolonial studies, environmental humanities, media and visual culture, translation, multilingualism, and language and cultural contact. The historical period is open.

The successful candidate will maintain a vigorous research agenda and contribute to teaching and mentoring at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The position carries a primary responsibility for the development and expansion of the Department’s offerings in Catalan language and culture and will also contribute regularly to the Spanish curriculum. This is a full‑time, nine‑month, university‑year appointment covering the fall and winter terms, with an anticipated start date of August 25, 2027.

Required Qualifications*

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Catalan Studies, Hispanic Studies, Romance Languages and Literatures, Comparative Literature, or a related field by the time of appointment. Fluency in Catalan and Spanish, together with high competence in English, is required. Knowledge of or scholarly engagement with additional Romance languages and cultures is welcome but not required. Applicants should demonstrate evidence of scholarly excellence or exceptional promise and a strong commitment to effective undergraduate and graduate teaching.
