Job Summary:
The Department of Psychiatry at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time Assistant Professor (HS). The successful candidate will be responsible for:
Education
  • Participate in the educational mission of the College of Medicine and the School of Graduate Studies, including teaching and curricular responsibilities as assigned by the School of Graduate Studies.
  • Contribute to the education of medical students through lectures, small-group facilitation, problem-based learning (PBL), and team-based learning (TBL) sessions within the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences curriculum.
  • Mentor medical students, residents, and fellows on research projects, providing guidance in study design, methodology, statistical analysis, manuscript preparation, and scholarly dissemination.
  • These educational responsibilities are encompassed within Dr. Barr's base appointment and effort allocation, and demonstrated engagement in teaching, mentorship, and educational scholarship will be expected as part of the criteria for his eventual promotion.

Clinical Research Operations
  • Conduct clinical research studies, including study design, protocol development, data collection, data analysis, and reporting.
  • Manage study participants and ensure adherence to study protocols, regulatory requirements, and ethical standards.
  • Maintain accurate and complete study documentation, regulatory files, and research records.

Data Management & Analysis
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret complex clinical, neurophysiological, genetic, and geospatial data.
  • Perform statistical analyses and prepare data summaries, tables, and visualizations.
  • Support the preparation of manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals and presentations at local, national, and international conferences.

Collaboration & Communication
  • Coordinate and collaborate with cross-functional, multidisciplinary, and translational teams, including physicians, nurses, statisticians, and other healthcare and research professionals.
  • Prepare and present study findings to internal stakeholders and external audiences.
  • Assist with project-related communications and reporting to funding agencies.
  • Coordinate with the Vice Chair of Research on departmental efforts to develop, expand, and integrate research programming within the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, including the cultivation of trainee-facing research opportunities and new collaborative initiatives.

Research Support & Development
  • Conduct research aligned with the scientific aims of funded projects at SUNY Downstate, with emphasis on:
  • Geospatial analyses of psychiatric phenotypes and comorbidities in the Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism (COGA).
  • Leveraging ancestrally diverse datasets to identify causal variants for psychiatric disorders as part of the PsycheMERGE consortium.
  • Analysis of developmental trajectories of neurophysiological measures.
  • Examining relationships between psychiatric disorders and comorbid medical conditions using EHR data from the All of Us Research Program and the Million Veteran Program.
  • Provide support for research-related tasks, including applications for publicly accessible datasets, preparation of funding agency reports, and project documentation.
  • Contribute to the development of new funding proposals for state, federal, and foundation agencies.

Required Qualifications:
  • PhD in Psychology, Neuroscience, Public Health, Biology or a related field.
  • Experience in conducting clinical or translational research.
  • Strong analytical skills and proficiency in data management and statistical analysis.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with psychiatric or behavioral health research.
  • Familiarity with genomic analyses (e.g. GWAS, polygenic scoring), neurophysiological data or geospatial methods.
  • Experience with IRB submissions and human subjects research compliance.
  • Proficiency with statistical software (e.g. R, SPSS, SAS, Python).
