Job description
The Department of Chemical & Materials Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Alberta is seeking applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor in Materials Processing for Sustainability. This position is part of the University of Alberta's priority to build a diverse faculty in strategic research areas; thus, candidates from traditionally underrepresented and equity-deserving groups are strongly encouraged to apply.
We welcome applications from scholars with research expertise in materials engineering, with a research focus on manufacturing processes for sustainability, such as advanced carbon materials, fibrous materials, recycled materials, and composite materials, and the processed products in composite structures and/or functional devices for energy storage/transportation. The areas of application could include: infrastructure for fossil fuels (gas/oil), greenhouse gas mitigation (e.g., CO2), dual-use applications, and other related advanced materials applications. The candidate is expected to develop a grant-funded research program in this area and to teach courses including materials science, mechanical properties, and manufacturing.
This role will be in the Department of Chemical & Materials Engineering. Minimum Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field.Â
- Licensed Professional Engineer or become a licensed Professional Engineer through the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) within five years from the date of hire.
- A record of publication in reputable, peer-reviewed journals and conferences, proceedings, as well as research experience and skills in Materials Processing for Sustainability.
- Demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses.
- A record of service and volunteerism broadly related to their research and teaching.
Preferred Qualifications
- Teaching experience and training in teaching, lesson planning, and curriculum design.
- Demonstrated potential ability to supervise research students.
- Teaching, research, service, and volunteer work related to the role as well as community boards and organizations and outreach to and helping in underserved and underrepresented communities.
- Grant application and financial management experience and/or training.
- Industry experience in engineering, sciences, and technology industries.
- Experience with interdisciplinary and collaborative research projects as well as with managing large, multi-year research projects.
- Experience working with industry and community partners for research projects.
- Team, lab, and facility management experience, including but not limited to safety, supervision, and procurement.

Teaching (40%): Â Participation in teaching programs, including classroom teaching, supervision of students conducting research, and personal interactions with and advising students. An Academic Faculty member may decide on specific course content and instructional methodology, recognizing the approved course description, and academic policy approved by the Department, the Faculty, and the University.
