Job SummaryThe School of Education at The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) invites applicants for two (2) full-time, tenure-track, Assistant Professor positions, beginning August 2026 with requirements to be physically present on campus. The research area of specialization for this position is open. Our faculty have established records of scholarship in culturally responsive education, multilingual learners, educational equity, multimodal composition, and inquiry. We aim to recruit applicants who will produce impactful research and who will emphasize training to initial licensure candidates in the areas of elementary education to become technologically competent, culturally responsive educators who have an impact on the learning of P-12 students. The School of Education's Curriculum and Instruction and Elementary Education programs include bachelor's and master's degrees and include face-to-face, online, and hybrid delivery formats. Qualified applicants will be prepared to contribute to the School of Education's research and teaching missions at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Developing a strong independent research program.
  2. Collaborating with colleagues on program development and enhancement of pre-service and in-service teacher education programs.
  3. Seeking external funding.
  4. Teaching and mentoring students across programs.
  5. Contributing to the mission of the university and profession through service activities.
  6. Performing other duties as assigned.

Minimum QualificationsDoctoral degree in Curriculum and Instruction, ElementaryEducation, or closely related field with a focus in elementary education (byAugust 2026).
Two (2) or more years of full-time licensed teachingexperience with standards-based curriculum in an elementary general educationclassroom.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver accurate, concise and quality communication (verbal and written) in a timely manner to all populations.
  • Experience setting clear performance expectations and provision of meaningful feedback.
  • Experience and/or familiarity with technology use, particularly in the online learning environment.

Preferred QualificationsDemonstrated excellence or potential for excellence in scholarship and research.
Experience with teaching reading, mathematics, or inclusive practices in elementary settings.
