Job description

Position Overview
Morris-Shea Bridge Company is seeking a reliable Escort Driver (Pilot Car Driver) to support the safe transportation of oversize and overweight loads to project sites throughout the region. Escort drivers are responsible for assisting heavy haul truck drivers by identifying route hazards, helping manage traffic around oversize loads, and ensuring loads move safely in compliance with permit requirements. This position plays an important role in maintaining the safety of our drivers, equipment, and the motoring public.
Key Responsibilities
  • Escort oversize and overweight loads to and from project sites.
  • Communicate with truck drivers and other escort vehicles via radio.
  • Monitor traffic conditions and assist with safe movement of loads through congested areas.
  • Identify potential hazards including low bridges, overhead utilities, narrow roadways, and construction zones.
  • Operate escort equipment including warning signs, amber lights, safety flags, and height poles when required.
  • Assist with route surveys prior to heavy haul deliveries when necessary.
  • Maintain proper escort positioning in accordance with state permit requirements.
  • Ensure escort vehicle and safety equipment are maintained and ready for operation.
  • Communicate any route or safety concerns to drivers and operations staff.
  • When not escorting loads, assist with yard operations and other support tasks as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to communicate clearly via phone and two-way radio.
  • Ability to work flexible hours depending on load schedules.
  • Strong awareness of roadway safety and traffic conditions.
  • Ability to travel as required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Pilot/Escort certification.
  • Previous experience escorting oversize or overweight loads.
  • Familiarity with heavy haul transportation operations.

Schedule
  • Average 40-50 hours per week.
  • Schedule will vary depending on project and transport needs.
  • Some early mornings, evenings, and occasional weekend work may be required.

Additional Information
When not escorting loads, drivers may assist with yard work, equipment preparation, and other operational duties. Compensation will be based on experience.
