Position Summary

Texas Materials is seeking a skilled and safety-focused Excavator Operator to join our construction team. The Excavator Operator is responsible for operating heavy equipment to perform excavation, grading, trenching, loading, material handling, and site preparation activities. This position plays a critical role in ensuring projects are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with company standards, project specifications, and regulatory requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Operate excavators safely and efficiently to perform excavation, grading, trenching, and material placement work.
  • Dig and maintain trenches for utilities, drainage systems, and underground infrastructure.
  • Load trucks, move materials, and assist with site development and earthwork activities.
  • Read and interpret grade stakes, construction plans, and project specifications.
  • Work closely with grade shooters, foremen, laborers, and other equipment operators to achieve production goals.
  • Perform fine grading and finish work when required.
  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of equipment.
  • Monitor equipment performance and report maintenance or repair needs promptly.
  • Perform routine cleaning and preventative maintenance of equipment.
  • Follow all company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and safe work practices.
  • Maintain awareness of underground utilities and overhead hazards.
  • Assist with general construction duties as needed.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with crew members, supervisors, and customers.
QualificationsEducation
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
Experience
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience operating excavators in construction, site development, heavy civil, utility, or earthwork projects preferred.
  • Experience working around underground utilities is preferred.
  • Experience with GPS-enabled machine control systems is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of safe excavator operating practices and construction site safety.
  • Ability to read and understand construction plans, grade stakes, and utility layouts.
  • Strong understanding of excavation, trenching, and grading techniques.
  • Ability to identify potential job site hazards and work safely around personnel and equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors and crew members.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to sit for extended periods while operating equipment.
  • Ability to climb on and off heavy equipment frequently.
