Production Specialist (Finish)

1. Production:

1. 1. Operate the equipment in a safe and efficient manner
   2. Dump dumpsters and hoppers safely and clean up any spills
   3. Assure proper stacking of skins at outfeed and remove marked reject skins as needed
   4. Assist operator to monitor all operations and parameters of the rip saw and take steps to resolve any irregularities while insuring maximum run time
   5. Perform saw blade changes in a safe and efficient manner
   6. Monitor application of humidification water
   7. Monitor all aspects of prime line packaging, bundle marking, and take steps to resolve any irregularities while insuring maximum run time
   8. Optimize material usage and notify operator of line needs to do so
   9. Assist with booth and line clean ups in a safe and efficient manner
   10. Ensure product and materials are stored in appropriate locations
   11. Monitor all aspects of door skin packaging and notify packager of any irregularities
   12. Assure proper relief before departing - Overtime may be required
   13. Fill in during break times, vacation, or as needed during production
   14. Assure that assigned areas stay clean and free of clutter at all times

1. Quality:

1. 1. Ensure proper labeling of finished door skin loads
   2. Perform, interpret, and act on assigned quality tests/data
   3. Participate in SQDCI
   4. Remove any press line marked rejects from production
   5. Ensure finished skin loads are stacked correctly to avoid product damage
   6. Understand, associate, and apply packaging specifications to operational decisions
   7. Know quality specifications and customer needs for your area

1. Housekeeping:

1. 1. Perform system and area clean-up tasks as required
   2. Maintain housekeeping throughout entire facility, paying special attention to assigned area (prime line, paint kitchen, and humidification deck, under /around saws, shuttle carts, finished skin storage and packagers areas)
   3. Assure that all tools, brooms, air lines are returned to their designated areas after use
   4. Maintain forklifts and clean as needed
   5. Assist with primeline cleanups as needed

1. Communications:

1. 1. Communicate with operators and assistants throughout the shift regarding skin quality and process conditions
   2. Communicate with on coming and off going personnel to ensure continuity between shifts
   3. Communicate effectively with management regarding issues, adjustments, and changes that have taken place.  Notify them of supply issues, maintenance needs, hazards, and accidents/injuries
   4. Maintain complete and accurate written and/or electronic records and data.

1. Maintenance:

1. 1. Be familiar with components, sub-systems, support systems, and terminology of the equipment
   2. Make rounds as directed, be watchful for worn or malfunctioning equipment, and notify maintenance and management
   3. Perform/assist in maintenance and preventive maintenance tasks to minimize downtime
   4. Complete daily forklift inspections

1. 1. Know and understand all safety procedures
   2. Will be required to learn and understand other jobs in the department for coverage of short periods of time, including breaks, lunch and vacation.

Safe Work Practices:  Wear hearing protection, safety glasses, and steel toe footwear at all times. Stay aware of the job at hand and be alert for slippery floors.  Keep work area clean and free of debris.  Long hair must be tied back above collar.  Loose clothing is not allowed on plant floor including but not limited to: Dangling Pant Legs, Neck Ties, Long or Dangling Belts, and Hooded Sweatshirts.  No jewelry is allowed including but not limited to: Rings, Watches, and Necklaces. Use proper lifting techniques.  Watch for forklift traffic.  Maintain three points of contact and use caution when climbing stairs and ladders.  Only use an approved low pressure device to remove fiber and sawdust from clothing.  Lockout/Tagout all sources before working on equipment.  Avoid contact with hot steam pipes.  Comply with all safety training including but not limited to: Do not operate any equipment or tools that have missing guards or safety devices, Lockout/Tagout, Confined Space, Fall Protection, Ergonomics, Forklift, PPE, Emergency Preparedness, Hazard Communication, Electrical Safety and Blood-borne Pathogen Prevention.  Discuss all non-routine tasks with your manager prior to start.

Required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Eye Protection, Hearing Protection, Gloves when handling skins, and Fall Protection when working at unguarded heights above six feet or when traveling and/or operating any high lift equipment.  Face shield and safety glasses are required:  When you are using or within 10 feet of any of the following: wire wheels, power wire brush, cut off wheel, portable grinder, bench grinder.

SAFE WORK INSTRUCTION

Priming skins

Skin handling, runner handling (splinters), storage conveyors, slippery floors, straightening heavy loads of skins, scissor lifts, conveyor belt nip points.

Wear gloves.  Stay off of storage conveyors unless off and locked out.  Keep floors clean and dry.  Get help straightening loads.  Keep all scissor lift guards in place and do not place any body parts on or under lifts.  Do not approach nip points unless equipment is off and locked out.

Paint Booth Cleanup

Booth chains, muscle-skeletal injuries from heavy lifting, paint dust, high-pressure paint system, slippery work surface, scrapers have sharp edges.

Wear gloves.  White suits are also available.  Never clean trough unless booth chains and paint supply are off and locked out.  Use proper lifting technique.  Keep booth work surfaces clean and dry to avoid slip hazards.  Use caution when scraping trough.  Never scrape towards any body part.

Cleaning paint booth air filters

Paint dust, dust explosion, muscle-skeletal injuries from heavy lifting.

Wear gloves and dust mask.  Be sure mask fits correctly.  Do not perform welding or cutting in the in vicinity.

Cleaning humidification spray tips

Pressurized humidification spray system, pinch points, slippery work surface.

Wear latex gloves and safety glasses.  Lockout supply water and bleed off pressure before beginning work.  Never lean over conveyor to clean tips.  Use properly sized wrenches for the task.  Keep work surfaces clean and dry to avoid slip hazards.

Machine maintenance

When doing work that is unfamiliar to you check with the task supervisor to gain clear and complete understanding of all procedures and instructions involved.  Do not attempt to do work for which you have not been trained.

Resetting breakers and over loads on starters.

Arc flash, dust explosions, and shock hazards. 

Make certain the starter is not energized by turning associated equipment off with the push button or other style of switch before turning the disconnect off at the panel.  Make certain the door is latched and never stand in front of the cabinet when it is being energized.  Never open an electrical panel unless wearing the appropriate arch flash gear and PPE.

Moving loads of door skins or supplies with a forklift.

Unstable loads and stacks.  Heavy loads, pedestrian traffic, blind corners, slick floors, elevated loads, forklift tipping over, other lift truck traffic, uneven and rough floors or roads.

Use backstops when available.   Don't exceed lift capacity of the forklift.  Use your horn to warn pedestrians of forklift traffic, slow down at blind spots. Travel with empty forks as close to the floor as possible.   Use absorbent to dry wet surfaces.  Carry loads as close to the floor as possible.  Carry loads back on the forks.  Do not carry riders.    Use caution when working in congested areas.  Follow all JELD-WEN lift truck procedures.  (YOU ARE REQUIRED TO WEAR YOUR SEAT BELT).

Working on elevated structures.

Slips and falls.

Analyze the situation. Wear fall protection when working at unguarded heights above six feet or when traveling and/or operating any high lift equipment.

Clean around stacker and banders, underneath.

Slips and falls, caught in pinch points or moving equipment.

Lock-Out procedures in getting on, under or in equipment. Keep clutter picked up and wipe up any liquid spills or leaks.

Equipment start-up.

When equipment is started most of it is beyond the operator's line of sight.

Machines may start up automatically. Keep away from saws, pinch points, moving machinery. Recognize the startup horn. Communicate with operator of location during startup.  

Cleanup involving air chisels.

Air chisels and scrapers have sharp edges.  Resinated fibers.  Liquid resin.

Wear goggles when using air wands.  Comply with safety precautions listed in the Material Safety Data Sheets.  Lockout equipment.  Wear specified pMDI PPE when working on the resin guns, resin pump and filters.

Cleanup Equipment (Ink Jets, Change Liquid and Air Filters)

Pressurized systems, liquid slip hazard.  

Turn off equipment, depressurize, use catch pan for spills, dispose of cleanup material properly.

Skin/Trim Pileups.

Saws, conveyors, chains, belts. 

Lockout equipment before entering the saw shack to remove skins/trim pieces.  Ensure saw blades have stopped moving before reaching hands and arms into equipment.

Cleaning fiberline around belts and motors.

Conveyor pinch points.  Trim saws.  Catching air wands in rolls or belts.  Airborne or static resinated fibers. 

Keep hands and clothing away from saws and pinch points. Be sure belt and chain guards are in place. Be sure conveyor drive is locked out and stopped before unplugging.  Follow specific PPE requirements for cleaning up resinated fibers.

Handling master skins.

Burn from hot skin; pinch points on unloader belts and rollers; falling while straightening skins in the unloader.

Wear gloves when handling hot skins.  Lockout unloader belts before working on them.  Keep hands away from unloader belts and rollers while they are running. Communicate with and be sure the rest of crew knows your intentions before working on the unloader. Use fixed ladders attached to the unloader to access skins.  Move master skins carefully and follow plant specific procedures.

Slips and falls.

Analyze the situation. Wear fall protection when working at unguarded heights above six feet or when traveling and/or operating any high lift equipment.

Exterior equipment cleanup, maintenance, and repair.

Various potential hazards when working near, on, or in a baghouse, cyclones, dryer tube, etc.

Watch for traffic, slick or uneven surfaces, and follow all safety training related to the task. When doing work that is unfamiliar to you check with the manager to gain clear and complete understanding of all procedures and instructions involved.  Do not attempt to do work for which you have not been trained.  Follow lock-out training.

Repairs, maintenance, and other non-routine tasks.

Wrench slipping; lifting heavy parts; equipment starting up

Discuss safety implication associated with non-routine task with your shift manager prior to starting the work.  Use proper lifting techniques.  Use the correct tools for the job.  Do not attempt to do work for which you have not been trained.  Follow lock-out training.

Moving dies.

Lifting heavy dies (tipping).  Dies sliding off the forks. Can't brake quickly.

Use forklift rated for the load.  Drive slowly and cautiously.  Travel with die to the back of the forks.

General Cleanup

Dust/Fiber in air, working around automated equipment

Only use compressed air on motors and areas that can't be reached with a broom. Use approved blow down stations when blowing down yourself; be aware of pinch points and moving equipment. Follow all lock-out/tag-out procedures, use dust mask/respirators as required.

Size changes and subsequent adjustments to the setup.

Working around moving machinery.  Operating powered traverse.

Shut down equipment prior to making adjustments.  Never work on equipment unless locked out per instructions.

Adjusting infeed suction cups

Scissors lift, pinch points, automated equipment.

Stay off scissors lift and conveyor unless turned off and locked out.  Lock out feeder prior to adjusting equipment.

Stacking ripped skins.
