Job description

Position Summary

The Utility General Operator Maintenance employee is responsible for supporting the safe, clean, and efficient operation and maintenance of a facility, building, or work site. This position performs a variety of general labor, housekeeping, material-handling, basic maintenance, and operational support duties. The employee may assist operators, mechanics, electricians, and other maintenance personnel as needed while following established safety procedures and company policies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain clean, orderly, and safe work areas throughout the facility and job site.
  • Sweep and clean floors, remove trash and debris, and maintain general housekeeping standards.
  • Perform basic maintenance and minor repairs, such as replacing light bulbs, addressing minor leaks, and making simple adjustments or repairs.
  • Assist maintenance personnel with routine maintenance activities and other assigned tasks.
  • Load, unload, lift, carry, and move tools, equipment, materials, supplies, and other items as required.
  • Assist Operators, electricians, mechanics, and other employees with routine work and operational activities.
  • Perform basic outdoor maintenance, including grass cutting, snow removal, shoveling, salting, plowing, clearing walkways, removing debris, and maintaining exterior areas.
  • Operate basic hand tools, power tools, and equipment in accordance with training and safety requirements.
  • Assist with general facility and equipment upkeep as directed by supervisors.
  • Report unsafe conditions, equipment problems, leaks, damage, or other maintenance concerns to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Follow written and verbal instructions and complete assigned work in a timely and professional manner.
  • Perform other general utility, maintenance, housekeeping, and operational duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to safely lift, carry, push, and pull heavy materials and equipment.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, and work for extended periods.
  • Ability to use basic hand tools and power equipment safely.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to work independently as well as effectively with Operators, Maintenance personnel, and other team members.
  • Basic mechanical or maintenance skills are preferred.
  • Strong commitment to workplace safety, cleanliness, and proper work practices.
  • Reliable attendance, punctuality, and willingness to perform a variety of physical and general utility duties.

Safety Requirements

  • Follow all company, facility, and applicable occupational safety rules and procedures.
  • Properly use required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Follow lockout/tagout and other applicable safety procedures when performing assigned work.
  • Operate tools, equipment, and machinery only when properly trained and authorized.
  • Immediately report unsafe conditions, injuries, spills, equipment defects, or other hazards to a supervisor.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area to help prevent accidents and injuries.

Physical Requirements

This position requires frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, and reaching. The employee must be capable of safely handling materials and equipment of varying weights and working in both indoor and outdoor environments. The position may require working in varying weather conditions, around noise, dust, machinery, and other normal industrial or job-site conditions.

Working Conditions

The Utility General Operator Maintenance position may involve work in a facility, warehouse, production area, mechanical area, outdoor work site, or other designated locations. Employees may be exposed to varying temperatures, noise, dust, moving equipment, and other workplace conditions. Appropriate training and PPE will be provided or required in accordance with company policies.
