Position Summary
The Marina Forklift Operator is a full-time, year-round position responsible for safely operating marina forklifts and related equipment to support vessel launching, hauling, transportation, and storage operations at both Dewey Beach Yacht Club. This position plays a critical role in ensuring the safe movement and storage of customer vessels while maintaining a high level of customer service and operational efficiency.
The ideal candidate is safety-focused, dependable, detail-oriented, and experienced operating heavy equipment in a marina environment. This role requires working outdoors in varying weather conditions and interacting professionally with marina customers and staff.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Forklift & Vessel Operations
Safely operate marina forklifts, hydraulic trailers, and other equipment used for vessel launching, hauling, transportation, and storage
Perform vessel haul-outs, launches, rack storage placement, and boat movements in accordance with marina operating procedures
Inspect vessels before and after movement and communicate any observed concerns to management
Organize and maintain vessel storage areas to maximize efficiency and safety
Coordinate vessel movements with marina staff, customers, and management
Assist with staging boats for service, storage, customer delivery, and launch schedules
Secure vessels properly within storage areas and verify storage locations are accurately maintained
Assist with marina opening and closing procedures as assigned
Support transient and seasonal slip operations, including vessel arrivals and departures
Provide docking assistance when needed
Participate in storm preparation, emergency response, and vessel securing procedures
Equipment Maintenance & Inspections
Conduct daily pre-operation inspections of forklifts and marina equipment
Maintain equipment cleanliness and ensure safe operating condition
Report maintenance needs, equipment malfunctions, or safety concerns immediately
Complete forklift inspection logs and operational documentation as required
Assist with basic preventative maintenance and equipment care
Customer Service
Provide professional and courteous service to marina members, guests, tenants, and vendors
Assist customers during vessel launch and haul-out operations
Answer questions regarding vessel storage, movement schedules, and marina procedures
Maintain positive working relationships with customers and coworkers
Safety & Compliance
Follow all company safety policies, marina operating procedures, and equipment operating standards
Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations and marina safety requirements
Utilize proper personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times
Report accidents, incidents, near misses, or hazardous conditions immediately
Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment
Qualifications
Previous marina forklift, marine travel lift, heavy equipment, construction equipment, or industrial forklift experience preferred
Experience handling vessels and working in a marina environment strongly preferred
Ability to safely maneuver boats of various sizes in storage and launching operations
Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Excellent communication and customer service skills
Valid driver's license required
Forklift certification or ability to obtain certification required
Physical Requirements
Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions year-round
Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb, and lift up to 50 pounds regularly
Ability to safely enter and exit heavy equipment multiple times throughout the day
Ability to work weekends, holidays, and extended hours during peak boating seasons as needed
