Job description

Reporting to the U.S. Transport Manager, the Assistant Transportation Manager oversees all internal trucking activities within its service area, ensuring safe, compliant, and cost effective operation of company drivers and transport equipment. This role is responsible for maintaining high safety standards, optimizing driver staffing and fleet utilization, improving trucking performance metrics, and ensuring all regulatory, maintenance, and operational requirements are met. The position partners closely with the Director of Field Services and cross functional teams to enhance safety programs, strengthen fleet performance, and deliver reliable service to internal and external customers.

The candidate selected for this role must be willing and within a reasonable distance to commute to the Eastern Seaboard.

What you’ll do:

Safety Leadership

•         Safety Compliance — Ensure all drivers adhere to safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.

•         Safety Program Development — Collaborate with Field Services leadership to develop and implement enhanced safety programs.

•         Behavior Monitoring — Monitor Samsara risky behaviors and coach drivers toward improvement.

•         Incident Prevention — Minimize recordable incidents, preventable MVIs, and regulatory infractions.

Driver & Fleet Operations

•         Driver Staffing Optimization — Maintain the optimal number of drivers to meet service requirements safely and efficiently.

•         Fleet Utilization — Improve how company trucks are deployed to maximize efficiency and reduce cost.

•         Regulatory Compliance — Ensure all fleet equipment meets regulatory standards and PM schedules.

•         Maintenance Oversight — Assign repairs to cost effective facilities and negotiate 3rd party shop rates.

•         Fleet Performance Analysis — Analyze fleet performance data and implement improvements.

•         Route & Guideline Compliance — Ensure drivers follow routing standards and regulatory guidelines.

Performance & Compliance

•         Driver Performance Monitoring — Track driver efficiency, behavior, and compliance with DQ file and training requirements.

•         KPI Management — Manage safety KPIs, truck utilization, on time performance, cost per unit metrics, and PM adherence.

•         Data Driven Improvement — Use operational data to identify trends and drive continuous improvement.

Cross Functional Collaboration

•         Internal Partnerships — Work with Sales, Supply, Logistics, Procurement, Accounting, HS&E, and other divisions to support operational goals.

•         External Stakeholder Management — Coordinate with facility leaseholders and regulatory bodies as needed.

•         Communication & Feedback — Communicate expectations to drivers and provide feedback to Field Services leadership.

•         Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

What you bring:

  • Secondary Education with Specialized Training (up to one year)
  • Intermediate Experience – More than three years and less than five years
  • Transportation Safety Standards — DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, driver qualification, incident prevention, and regulatory compliance.
  • Fleet Operations & Maintenance — PM programs, repair workflows, equipment lifecycle, and utilization strategies.
  • Regulatory Compliance — Federal, state, and local transportation regulations and recordkeeping.
  • Driver Performance Management — Coaching, behavior monitoring systems, efficiency improvement.
  • Logistics & Routing — Routing guidelines, delivery scheduling, and operational planning.
  • Data & KPI Analysis — Ability to interpret fleet performance data and operational dashboards.
  • Vendor Negotiation — Third party repair pricing, service agreements, and cost control.
  • Customer Service Expectations — Understanding internal/external customer needs and service standards.

The expected annual salary range for this role is $75,000- $85,000/year.
