Job description

Under the direction of the Night Custodial Supervisor, this position assists in organizing and directing work required to facilitate the cleaning and maintenance of campus buildings. The Assistant Supervisor oversees assigned Night Custodial team members and routinely performs cleaning and maintenance duties within their own designated areas. This position helps ensure that custodial responsibilities are completed safely, thoroughly, and in a timely manner. In the absence of the Night Custodial Supervisor, the Assistant Supervisor assumes supervisory duties as needed.

Position Status: Non-Exempt
Salary Range: $20.20 - $22.60. This is the expected salary range for this position. The actual salary offered will depend on a candidate's experience and education, and departmental budget.
Responsibilities
  • Oversees the Night Custodial team to ensure all assigned tasks and projects are completed effectively.
  • Leads special projects and assigned tasks under the direction of the Night Custodial Supervisor.
  • Ensures that the Night Custodial team follows all departmental policies and procedures.
  • Organizes the team's work by establishing priorities, schedules, and deadlines, while supporting Lead Night Custodians in coordinating daily assignments.
  • Establishes and maintains positive, effective working relationships with Night Custodial team members, students, and colleagues across campus.
  • Promotes a safe work environment by conducting regular equipment safety inspections and reviewing safety procedures with the Night Custodial Supervisor.
  • Inspects assigned areas cleaned by team members, identifies work that does not meet established standards, and provides feedback to Lead Night Custodians, Night Custodians, or the Night Custodial Supervisor as appropriate.
  • Monitors and documents recurring performance concerns and reports them to the Night Custodial Supervisor; assists in addressing these concerns with staff members as directed.
  • Implements guidance from the Night Custodial Supervisor related to performance improvement plans and training initiatives.
  • Assists the Night Custodial Supervisor with maintaining custodial equipment and supply inventory.
  • Assists in arranging and participates in training sessions, seminars, and other professional development opportunities to improve custodial methods, equipment use, and supply management.

Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
  • Knowledge of custodial equipment and supplies, including proper usage.
  • Experience performing specialized custodial tasks (e.g., floor stripping, carpet shampooing, etc.).
  • Ability to make sound decisions related to custodial operations and provide constructive feedback when needed.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to motivate employees and foster a collaborative team environment.
  • Ability to demonstrate leadership by serving as a role model for team members.
  • Ability to work effectively with students, faculty, staff, and the general public.
  • Ability to handle emergency situations in a calm and professional manner.
  • Basic computer skills (email, timekeeping system, etc.).

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous custodial supervisory experience.
  • Experience using a work order or facilities ticketing system.

Working Conditions/Physical RequirementsThe essential functions of this position require regular movement between indoor and outdoor campus locations, with exposure to varying weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold. Work is often physically demanding in nature and may require walking, navigating uneven or slippery surfaces, climbing stairs and ladders, bending, kneeling, and standing for extended periods. Required abilities include frequent use of fine motor skills to push, pull, or maneuver a range of equipment. Work requires regular lifting of objects up to 50 pounds, and occasional lifting of up to 100 pounds.
