Medical Assistant
Dermatology Specialists of Dallas
Dermatology Specialists of Dallas is seeking a compassionate, detail-oriented Medical Assistant to join our growing team. Our practice specializes in general dermatology and Mohs micrographic surgery, providing comprehensive medical and surgical dermatologic care to patients of all ages.
The Medical Assistant is responsible for verifying patient information, documenting medical history, preparing patients for examination and procedures, assisting providers during medical and surgical treatments, and delivering exceptional patient care under the supervision of a licensed healthcare provider. This position supports both our general dermatology and Mohs surgery services and requires excellent clinical, organizational, and communication skills.
Key Responsibilities
General Responsibilities
  • Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Utilize the electronic health record (EHR) to accurately document patient demographics, medical history, review of systems, provider notes, and clinical information.
  • Answer and manage incoming telephone calls, return patient messages, and communicate professionally with patients and referring offices.
  • Schedule patient appointments and assist with appointment confirmations as needed.
  • Communicate laboratory, pathology, and biopsy results to patients as directed by the provider and document all communication appropriately.
  • Maintain accurate patient records and correspondence.
  • Assist with insurance authorizations, referrals, and prescription refill requests.
  • Obtain prior authorizations for medications.
  • Report and record applicable malignant diagnoses to the Florida Cancer Data System (FCDS), if applicable.
  • Prepare certified letters for patients requiring follow-up treatment for malignant pathology results.
  • Monitor clinical inventory and notify management when supplies require replenishment.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient clinical environment.
Clinical Responsibilities
General Dermatology
  • Welcome patients and provide outstanding customer service.
  • Obtain and document medical histories, chief complaints, medications, allergies, and review of systems.
  • Prepare patients for examinations and procedures.
  • Assist providers during medical dermatology visits, biopsies, cryotherapy, excisions, cosmetic procedures, and other in-office treatments.
  • Prepare and administer medications as directed by the provider.
  • Explain treatment plans, medications, and post-procedure instructions.
  • Ensure all required consents are completed before procedures.
  • Obtain pre- and post-procedure photographs when indicated.
  • Collect, label, and prepare pathology specimens according to laboratory protocols.
  • Remove sutures and perform dressing changes.
  • Educate patients regarding wound care, medications, and follow-up instructions.
  • Sterilize instruments and maintain OSHA and infection control standards.
  • Monitor medication, sample, and supply expiration dates.
  • Clean and restock exam rooms throughout the day.
  • Serve as a compassionate patient advocate, helping patients feel comfortable throughout their visit.
Mohs Surgery Responsibilities
  • Prepare surgical suites for Mohs procedures, ensuring all necessary instruments, supplies, and sterile equipment are available.
  • Assist the Mohs surgeon during surgical procedures using sterile technique.
  • Prepare sterile instrument trays and maintain the sterile field throughout surgery.
  • Assist with patient positioning, local anesthetic preparation, and procedural setup.
  • Provide patients with detailed verbal and written postoperative instructions.
  • Monitor patient comfort throughout surgical procedures and recovery.
  • Coordinate surgical schedules, pathology communication, and postoperative follow-up appointments.
  • Ensure surgical equipment is cleaned, sterilized, and maintained according to OSHA and infection control standards.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Medical Assistant Certification strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of Medical Assistant experience; dermatology experience strongly preferred.
  • Previous Mohs surgery or surgical assisting experience is highly preferred but not required.
  • Willingness to learn Mohs surgery procedures and dermatologic surgical techniques.
  • Ability to travel between clinic locations as needed.
  • Bilingual skills are a plus but not required.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
This position operates primarily in a medical office and surgical clinic environment. Responsibilities require prolonged standing, walking, sitting, frequent use of computers and medical equipment, and continuous interaction with physicians, staff, patients, and referring providers. The Medical Assistant must be able to assist during surgical procedures, maintain sterile technique, and occasionally lift or move medical supplies and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds.
