Medical Laboratory Scientist / Medical Technologist – Weekday Night Shift

Department: Laboratory
Status: Full-Time | 1.0 FTE
Schedule: Monday – Thursday | 8:00 p.m. – 6:00 a.m. (Night Shift)
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Reports To: Supervisor – Laboratory Technical
Location: Pagosa Springs Medical Center – Pagosa Springs, Colorado


Position Summary

Pagosa Springs Medical Center (PSMC) is seeking a skilled Medical Laboratory Scientist / Medical Technologist to join our laboratory team on the night shift.

This position performs complex laboratory testing and analysis in multiple laboratory disciplines including hematology, chemistry, microbiology, serology, blood bank, coagulation, urinalysis, and phlebotomy. The technologist ensures accurate diagnostic testing, maintains laboratory instrumentation, and performs quality control procedures to support high-quality patient care.

The ideal candidate is a strong laboratory generalist who is comfortable working independently and prioritizing urgent testing in a hospital environment.


Key ResponsibilitiesLaboratory Testing & Analysis
  • Perform routine and specialized laboratory tests as ordered by physicians or healthcare providers
  • Conduct testing in areas including hematology, chemistry, microbiology, serology, blood bank, coagulation, urinalysis, and phlebotomy
  • Evaluate and verify laboratory test results and report critical values according to established procedures
  • Process patient specimens while maintaining specimen integrity and quality
Quality Control & Compliance
  • Perform and document quality control testing
  • Participate in laboratory proficiency testing and quality improvement activities
  • Follow laboratory policies, regulatory requirements, and infection control standards
  • Maintain accurate laboratory documentation and reporting
Equipment Maintenance & Troubleshooting
  • Perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting on laboratory instrumentation
  • Identify equipment issues and take appropriate corrective action
  • Maintain adequate inventory of reagents and supplies
Patient & Staff Support
  • Perform specimen collection and phlebotomy when required
  • Assist providers and hospital departments with laboratory requests
  • Educate patients regarding specimen collection when appropriate
  • Support training and orientation of new laboratory personnel

QualificationsEducation
  • Doctorate, Master’s, Bachelor’s, or Associate’s degree in Laboratory Sciences with completion of an approved internship in Medical Technology

Experience
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience as a clinical medical technologist or scientist preferred
  • Generalist laboratory experience in a hospital setting preferred
Licensure & Certifications
  • Medical Technologist (ASCP or AMT) certification required or ability to obtain registry within two (2) years of hire
  • MLT (ASCLS) or MT (ASCLS) or equivalent certification
  • Current AHA BLS certification for healthcare providers
  • Ability to distinguish colors accurately for laboratory testing
Skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of laboratory instrumentation and quality control processes
  • Proficiency with laboratory information systems (LIS) and electronic health records
  • Ability to prioritize workload and respond to STAT testing requests

Work Environment
  • Hospital laboratory setting
  • Exposure to blood, bodily fluids, chemicals, and laboratory reagents
  • Moderate noise level and frequent interruptions
  • Requires standing, walking, lifting, and performing repetitive laboratory tasks

Compensation & Benefits
  • Base Compensation Range: $33.25 - $51.40 hourly, based on 0-22 years of relevant experience. "Relevant experience" means relevant to the employee's responsibilities set forth in the job description as determined by the HR Manager, CAO, applicable department manager/director and applicable senior leader. 
  • Shift Differential Pay: 
    • Night Shift Differential: Employees who work majority of hours between 6:30 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. receive a Night Shift Differential of an additional $5.00 per hour. 
  • Starting Work Bonus: This position is eligible for a starting work bonus of up to $5,000. Eligibility, amount, and payment terms are subject to Pagosa Springs Medical Center’s compensation policies and may vary based on position, experience, and employment status. Bonus payments, if applicable, are typically issued after the employee has met required employment and service criteria. 
  • Moving Expense Reimbursement: This position is eligible for a moving expense reimbursement of up to $3,000. Reimbursement is subject to Pagosa Springs Medical Center’s relocation policy and requires prior approval. Eligible expenses and reimbursement amounts may vary based on position and individual circumstances. Reimbursement is processed in accordance with established policy and applicable tax regulations. 
  • Benefits: Benefits include generous paid time off, separate sick leave, health, dental, vision, life and AD&D insurance, long-term disability and option for short-term disability, and retirement plan with employer contribution.

  • Shift Type: Night, Monday - Thursday 8 p.m. - 6 a.m.
