The Speech/Language Pathology Assistant position is a 6 hours per day, 182 days per year.

The job of “Speech/Language/Pathology Assistant” is done for the purpose/s of assisting in providing instruction specific to the area of speech and language communication to students identified as having special needs; monitoring the use of augmentative communication devices and systems.

Essential Job Functions:

* Provides direct speech and language therapy to children and follows documented treatment plans or protocols.

* Conduct speech-language screenings using specified screening protocols developed by certificated speech language pathologist staff

. * Accompanies students to and from therapy sessions and/or prepares for speech-language session.

* Maintain comprehensive records and materials relating to screening results and provides information to certificated staff.

* Follow documented treatment plans or protocols developed by certificated staff: document and report pupil progress toward meeting established goals as stated in IEP (Individualized Education Plan) or an IFSP (Individualized Family Services Plan).

* Assist speech-pathologist staff during assessment of pupils; maintain confidentiality of information pertaining to pupils and their families.

* Schedule activities, prepare a variety of materials including charts, graphs, and other data display information; provide recordkeeping for student files and perform related office support tasks.

* Maintain clean equipment using infection control protocol; check and maintain equipment in proper working condition.

* Participate with certificated staff in research projects; attend in-service training and other related activities.

* Participate in classroom activities as required by speech-language pathology staff; attend conferences and workshops related to speech/language pathology services.

* Exhibits compliance with state and federal regulations.

* Experience Required:

Any combination of training, experience, and/or education equivalent to graduation from a recognized school or program for Speech/Language Pathology Assistant as part of an AA degree in Science including specialized coursework, observation supervision and fieldwork experience. Prior experience in educational or clinical settings is preferred

* Knowledge and Abilities:

Knowledge of Speech-language pathology equipment, materials, and procedures; Language development in children; articulation development; learning problems of children with special educational needs; student behavior management techniques and strategies; correct English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation; basic arithmetical concepts; simple record keeping and record management; personal computers and software, including word processing, learning and educational software. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and collaborative working relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties; understand and carry out oral and written directions, including intervention plans; utilize specialized communication systems and devices; assist in the educational program of assigned student(s); communicate effectively in oral and written form; learn and utilize current speech-language methods and procedures to be followed in an instructional setting; perform clerical tasks and operate office machines.

Working Conditions and Physical Abilities:

Office and school setting. Must be able to hear and speak to exchange information; see to perform assigned duties; sit, stoop, kneel, and stand for extended periods of time; possess dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer and other office equipment; kneel, bend at the waist, and reach overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally, to retrieve and store files, equipment, and supplies; lift light objects; lift severely handicapped students, up to adult size, to perform such tasks as transferring students into and out of wheelchairs and other apparatuses.

Employees new to the District are allowed salary schedule placement credit for up to two (2) years of previous experience with a maximum salary schedule entry placement for step three (3).
