Educational Interpreter

The Superintendent invites qualified and interested persons to apply for the position of Educational Interpreter.

Qualifications 

1. An appropriate New Jersey Department of Education Standard Certificate or eligible for an Emergency certificate as deemed necessary by https://www.nj.gov/education/certification/certsandtitles/                                
2. NJ Educational Services Certificate w/sign language interpreting endorsement.
3. EIPA Certification with a score of 3.0 or higher
4. Completion of the Educational Interpreter Training Classes including:
   1. Ethics and Laws for Educational Interpreters
   2. Methods of Instruction & Curriculum Development
   3. Deaf-Blind interpreting for Educational Interpreters
   4. Language Development for Educational Interpreters
5. Associate Degree or higher from an accredited college or university, those with performance route certification will also be considered
6. Ability to work effectively with parents, students, administrators and teachers
7. Ability to both produce accessible language and understand child and adolescent signers
8. Strong interpersonal and communication skills
9. Fluency in written and spoken English
10. Fluency in various forms of communication including ASL or the sign mode determined by the educational team
11. Possess knowledge specific to language development of Deaf and hard of hearing children
12. Ability to work well with individuals from diverse cultures
13. Required criminal history background check and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status

Responsibilities

1. Interpret, transliterate and otherwise facilitate the integration of Deaf and hard of hearing students, providing access to the curriculum in a mode that reflects the student's language use, as outlined in the student's IEP
2. Performs interpretation services for the Deaf and the hard of hearing students simultaneously and consecutively, in a variety of situations
3. Assists classroom teacher in the delivery of an effective instructional program
4. Work with individual hearing impaired students or small groups of hearing impaired student to reinforce learning of material or skills introduced by the teacher
5. Guide independent study, enrichment work and remedial work assigned by the teacher to the student(s) with hearing loss.
6. Model social strategies to encourage interaction between individuals who use sign language and those who do not.
7. For those with the appropriate certification, performs oral interpretation; present spoken messages utilizing easily read, clear mouth movements, orally repeat the spoken message of the Deaf or hard of hearing individual to the hearing individual, if necessary
8. Interpret for individual or small groups of students and staff members with auditory disabilities in the classroom, field trips or at assembly programs
9. Assist the teacher of the deaf and supervisor of the auditory impairments program in exploring and identifying the communication needs of students with hearing loss
10. Provide assistance to the instructional leader in the appropriate use and care of classroom amplification systems which allow auditory access to those students capable of using residual hearing
11. Report the malfunction/inappropriate use of such equipment to the appropriate professionals for repair/reinstruction pertaining to said equipment
12. Assist students with hearing loss to master the use of amplification technology (personal hearing aids, personal & classroom  assistive listening devices) and to  independently advocate for the appropriate use of classroom accommodations
13. Assist with the supervision of deaf and hard of hearing students during emergency drills, assemblies and field trips
14. Read and adhere to the Registry of interpreter for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct.
15. Display the highest ethical and professional behavior and standards when working with students, parents, school personnel, and agencies associated with the school
16. Protect confidentiality of records and information gained as part of exercising professional duties and use discretion in sharing such information within legal confines
17. Uphold and enforces school rules, administrative regulations and Board of Education policies
18. Serve as a role model for students, dressing and grooming professionally, demonstrating the importance and relevance of learning, accepting responsibilities, and demonstrating pride in the profession of interpreting
19. Provide technical assistance in the development of workshops, seminars and other programs on the needs and cultural mediation of the Deaf and hard of hearing community
20. Participate in professional development for the maintenance of certification status
21. Provide interpreting services for staff members with hearing loss during designated staff development days as assigned
22. Perform other duties with the scope of his/her employment and certification as may be assigned by supervisor, administrator or his/her designee

Salary, Terms & Affiliation 

1. Salary Range: $58,500 - $65,308
2. Employment Period: Ten (10) Month

3. Union Affiliation: Newark Teachers Union (NTU)
