Job Summary
Towson University (TU) has earned distinction as both a top 100 public university and one of the nation's great colleges to work for. Located north of Baltimore, TU currently enrolls over 19,000 students and is the second-largest university in the prestigious University System of Maryland. Towson University fosters a climate that is grounded in respect and supports the intellectual and personal growth of the entire university community.
The Towson University Department of Computer and Information Sciences in the Fisher College of Science and Mathematics offers six primary programs including: an ABET-accredited Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science, and an ABET-accredited cybersecurity program, a Bachelor of Science degree in Information Systems, a Bachelor of Science degree in Information Technology, a Master of Science degree in Computer Science, a Master of Science in Applied Information Technology, and a Doctor of Science degree in Information Technology. The Department of Computer and Information Sciences has approximately 47 full-time faculty members, 10 staff members, collectively over 2,000 undergraduate majors in Computer Science, Information Systems, and Information Technology programs, and approximately 400 graduate students. We have a strong research focus on cybersecurity, software engineering, human-computer interaction, data sciences, and systems.
The Department of Computer and Information Sciences (CIS) at Towson University is accepting applications for a Lab Systems Administrator who will be responsible for the administration and technical support of lab instructional and development environments, research servers, cloud services, and classroom technology. This position will assist the Director of Computer Resources in engaging with faculty and students to plan and implement a broad set of technologies. The system administrator will need to stay current with industry practices and security requirements related to these technologies and be able to adapt quickly to the changing needs of the department's CS, IS, and IT programs.
Responsibilities and Duties
Primary Service Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for assisting in the implementation and maintenance of production-level Windows, Linux, and virtual development environments, applications, and services for teaching and research labs.
  • Develop and maintain scripts for system updates, application deployment and access accounts.
  • Proactively identifying, resolving and communicating technical problems with minimal impact to classroom instruction or research.
  • Assist in developing a fully integrated and trained response 'mechanism' that can be applied in the event of a service interruption.

General Administrative Responsibilities:
  • Administer proactive maintenance responsibilities for lab and classroom technologies and projects.
  • Provider operations tracking and support for course and project facilities, resources, and supplies.
  • Responsible for proactively monitoring and resolution of assigned SRs queued for system installations or troubleshooting.
  • Manage regular system and lab checks for failed hardware components or warning indicators.
  • Oversee management of print server and reporting mechanisms.

Faculty and student technical support:
  • Provide technical support to faculty and student software engineering, data science and cybersecurity research groups. Provide guidance to student lab assistants and tutors.
  • Implement services for database courses, system updates, software version control, and VM/docker repositories.

Planning:
  • Develop project plans related to service upgrades, migrations, and integration.
  • Execute plans to include test scenarios to ensure that technology services meet requirements for functionality, continuity, and consistency of configuration within the labs.

Documentation:
  • Implement and maintain documentation of system installation, configuration, standards and guidelines.
  • Develop and document recommendations and policies for system configurations and lab usage.
  • Responsible for fully understanding, communicating, and documenting services for faculty and students.

Communication:
  • Deliver cross training in assigned services.
  • Collaborate with technical staff, faculty and students within CIS.
  • Collaborate with OTS and staying current with education sector.
  • Proactively communicate with management about issues that may affect delivery schedules or the reliability, security, performance of the environment.
  • Ensure compliance with time, task tracking and service status communications as directed by management.

Security and Risk Management:
  • Stay abreast with evaluating and maintaining security best practices for course and research services.
  • Provide auditable tracking of security and status of all systems, processes and access to service.

The work hours for this position may include evenings as needed.
Telework may be available for this position up to two days per week following the completion of 90 days of service in good standing.
Qualifications and Skills
Required Qualifications :
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Demonstrate strong proficiency with Windows and Linux operating systems.
  • Working knowledge of computing environments, scripting languages, system management and security.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks in a team environment, communicate technical information and possess interpersonal and problem solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Strong proficiency in software applications (e.g.: Win/Linux, VM, Docker, IDEs, development tools, data science, cybersecurity, system architecture, systems administration, social media, web development, programming languages, database engines, device drivers and software version control systems)

Salary and Benefits
Targeted hiring range is $66,000 and full university benefits that include 22 days of annual leave, up to 17 holidays, personal and sick days; excellent health, life, and retirement plans; and tuition remission.
