Job Summary:
The Radiation Safety Specialist will perform duties required by the University of Colorado Denver | Anschutz Medical Campus's radiation safety programs to meet all Federal, State and University regulations and policies. This position primarily focuses on radiation protection applications in the medical and research environment. This includes but is not limited to: supporting the university radioactive waste program, performing radiation surveys, receipt and distribution of radioactive materials, and calibration of radiation detection instrumentation.
Key Responsibilities:
10% - Assist with receipt and distribution of radioactive materials to both Anschutz Medical Campus and UCD downtown campus.
15% - Perform various radiation surveys, including but not limited to area dose rate surveys, contamination surveys, and package receipt surveys.
20% - Assist with the receipt, transport, processing, and disposal of various types of radioactive waste.
15% - Conduct general laboratory work, including counting samples for radioactive contamination and maintaining radiation detection systems.
10% - Assist with the laser safety program including new laser walkdowns and inspections
20% - Calibrate radiation detection instruments, review, and evaluate instrument performance, track and deliver instruments to researchers, and recommend follow up actions to ensure safety and compliance.
5% - Respond to incidents involving ionizing radiation. Investigate, advise, write reports, recommend remedial actions, and follow up actions. Report to regulatory agencies, if necessary.
5% - Emergency response to general incidents (chemical, biological, etc.) Initial response, investigate circumstances, cleanup or recommend clean up method, recommend remedial actions, follow up actions and document on EHS reports. Report to regulatory agencies if necessary.

Work Location:
Hybrid - this role is eligible for a hybrid schedule of 4 days per week on campus and as needed for in-person meetings and 1 day remote.

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
A bachelor's degree in basic science from an accredited institution.
1 year of professional level experience including direct responsibility for radiation physics, radiation biology, instrumentation, and handling of sources of ionizing radiation.
Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/military/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for a bachelor's degree on a year for year basis.
Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
A bachelor's degree in health physics, radiological health, medical physics, physical sciences, or a directly related field from an accredited institution.
At least one (1) year of experience in academic or medical research.
Experience in radiation safety in an academic or healthcare environment.
Experience working with radioactive waste.
Experience working in a broad scope radiation safety program.

Must be willing and able to pass a background investigation as outlined in 6 CCR 1007-1 Part 22
This is an essential services position. The incumbent is required to respond after hours during emergencies and report to work for regular assigned shifts during emergency campus closures.
Must be willing to enroll in the University Occupational Health program and complete fit testing on an annual basis.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of the principles and practice of health physics and radiation safety.
Knowledge of applicable state and federal radiation control standards/regulations and different uses of radioactive materials.
Knowledge of instrumentation used in radiation detection and measurement.
Demonstrate ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Demonstrate excellent customer service skills.
Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Access and PowerPoint), EHSA, and other similar software applications and the ability to learn to use these tools.
Must be able to work on-call when assigned.
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at UCD | AMC.
Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally.
Ability to perform assigned responsibilities with minimal to moderate supervision.
Ability to gather, interpret, report, and edit information.
Work with a variety of individuals and groups in a constructive and collaborative manner.
Knowledge of and ability to use personal computers or workstations.
