Job description

Construction Inspectors And Construction Engineers

RK&K is seeking a Construction Inspectors and Construction Engineers experienced in water/wastewater and utility construction inspection or knowledgeable in infrastructure construction and/or water/wastewater engineering and interested in applying this knowledge on construction sites. In this role you will support multiple Field Engineering and Inspection projects throughout Hampton Roads and Virginia's Middle Peninsula. Construction Inspectors work independently on project sites but work closely with project managers, project engineers, construction managers and other team members in provision of construction services on a variety of water, wastewater, stormwater, and related infrastructure and facility projects.

Essential Functions

  • Conduct regular inspections of water / wastewater, stormwater, utilities and related facilities construction projects to verify compliance with approved plans, codes, and safety regulations - to include pipeline and manhole rehabilitation, stormwater and sewer facility, water filtration and wastewater facilities construction and inspection etc
  • Provide field engineering, construction management and contract support services (submittal review, contract document interpretation, requests for information, correspondence, change requests, and change orders) as needed on site and in office
  • Ensure that construction workmanship and materials adhere to established industry standards and meet project specifications
  • Accurately document all construction inspection activities by creating daily reports and maintaining organized, detailed, and up to date field files
  • Oversee and coordinate material testing activities to ensure materials used meet project specifications
  • Conduct field measurements to establish quantities for pay item documentation as well as other contract administration documentation
  • Participate in close out activities, including preparation of punch lists and final inspection reports
  • Communicate effectively and collaboratively with clients, contractors, sub-contractors, and project teams including other disciplines, such as cost estimators, designers, and other engineers

Required Skills and Experience

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • An independent self-starter, versatile and interested in working on a variety of projects supporting the Utilities, CEI, and Water and Wastewater Groups
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications, shop drawings, engineering reports and test results
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the organization, retrieval, and presentation of construction documentation
  • Knowledge of building codes, estimating and general contractor pricing strategies
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Professional Suite including Word, Outlook, Project and Excel is required as well as tablet-based PDF annotators
  • VA Driver License and suitable driving records are required

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • One (1) to five (5) years of increasingly responsible, project experience in construction administration and inspection of water, wastewater, stormwater facilities and infrastructure (pipelines, force mains, pump stations, treatment) or similar field
  • Associate or bachelor's degree in Engineering Technology, Engineering or related construction field
  • Possession of current VDOT Construction Certifications or similar training and certifications
  • VDOT, NASSCO CIPP, Manhole Rehabilitation, Slurry Surfacing, ACE, DEQ, Hazmat certifications
  • Other roles/titles associated: Field Engineer, Inspector, resident engineer, assistant resident engineer, QA Manager, QCM, Project Administrator and others

Physical Demands

This role requires the ability to perform field inspections on active construction sites. The employee must be able to stand and walk for extended periods, navigate uneven terrain, and climb ladders or stairs. Ability to lift and carry inspection equipment and materials weighing up to 20–30 pounds on an occasional basis, with or without reasonable accommodation. Work is performed outdoors in varying weather conditions and may include exposure to construction-related hazards.
