Job description

Employment Type:Full timeShift:Day ShiftDescription:This position is responsible for following established procedures for preparation of specialty infant, human milk and formulas within an aseptic feeding preparation room in the inpatient clinical setting. The diet technician performs calculations and follow detailed steps for preparation of the special infant formulas as well as ordering, stocking and sanitation in the infant formula preparation room. The diet technician conducts nutrition screening according to the hospital policies and procedures and provides nutrition education to patients under the supervision of the registered dietitian.

As a Nutrition Technician, you'll be an essential member of the healthcare team, supporting safe infant feeding practices and contributing to highquality nutrition care for hospitalized patients. This role blends precision, compassion, and collaboration in a highly regulated clinical environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Infant Formula Preparation & Distribution:

  • Prepare specialized infant formulas and human milk fortifications in the Infant Formula Preparation Room in accordance with physician or neonatal provider (NNP) orders.

  • Maintain the highest sanitation and safety standards by cleaning and sanitizing all equipment before and after preparation, following hospital policy, HACCP standards, and aseptic technique.

  • Accurately prepare specialty feedings using standardized recipes, ENFitcompatible equipment, and required personal protective equipment (PPE).

  • Calculate preparation volumes, yields, and additive requirements using calculators and Microsoft Excel-based tools.

  • Identify when alternative feeding preparations are needed to ensure continuity of care.

  • Print and apply feeding labels with correct patient identification, barcodes, and expiration details.

  • Verify feeding orders and recipes in collaboration with registered dietitians, nurses, physicians, and nurse practitioners.

  • Document all preparations and related data accurately in the electronic health record (EHR).

  • Perform final quality checks, identifying and correcting errors prior to delivery.

  • Deliver prepared feedings to the appropriate nursing units in a timely manner.

Inventory, Equipment & Quality Control:

  • Manage inventory for the formula room, including ordering to par levels, restocking, and monitoring expiration dates.

  • Escalate supply shortages or issues promptly to appropriate leadership.

  • Maintain daily temperature logs for refrigeration and freezer equipment.

  • Monitor and communicate equipment maintenance needs.

  • Generate EHR reports to validate all components of feeding orders prior to preparation.

  • Enter charges accurately in Epic.

  • Assist with training and support of ancillary staff as needed.

Nutrition Screening & Education:

  • Conduct nutrition screenings in accordance with hospital and departmental policies.

  • Review medical records and interview patients to identify nutrition risk using established criteria.

  • Escalate patients to registered dietitians for assessment when appropriate.

  • Under the supervision of a registered dietitian, provide nutrition education to lowrisk patients using evidencebased interventions.

  • Refer highpriority patients for advanced nutrition counseling and document all education in the medical record.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Participate in departmental projects and other duties within scope of practice to support efficient operations.

  • Complete required food service handler training upon hire.

Position Requirements:

Education:

  • Required: Bachelor's degree in Nutrition or a related health field

  • Preferred: Bachelor's degree in Nutrition and Dietetics

Experience

  • Required: Less than one year of related experience

Licensure/Certifications:

  • Required: Illinois Food Handler Certification (may be obtained after hire)

  • Preferred: Nutrition and Dietetics Technician, Registered (NDTR)

Compensation & Benefits:

Hourly Pay Range: $16.70 - $25.53 USD
Actual compensation will be based on factors such as experience, education, certifications, location, and internal equity.
