What is an assistant in?

Assistant In positions, often found in academic or research settings, are entry-level roles that provide support to faculty, researchers, or administrative staff. Individuals in these roles typically assist with teaching, research projects, or office management duties, depending on the department's needs. These positions are a great way to gain experience and develop skills in a chosen field while working closely with experienced professionals. The specific responsibilities may vary, but they generally focus on supporting the core functions of the organization or institution.

Job description

The Opportunity

We are looking for a highly motivatedย Senior Claims Assistantย to join our Subrogation team in a blended role.ย  If you have a strong customer focus coupled with well-developed communication, organization, analytical, and interpersonal skills, we'd like to know!

Reporting to the National Subrogation Unit Team Leader, you will play a critical role in supporting our national team.ย  In this expanded capacity, you will be supporting the operational backbone of our subrogation efforts across Canada - ensuring high-volume claims processes run smoothly - while also actively stepping in to investigate claims, identify responsible parties, and initiate recovery negotiations.ย These claims include personal and commercial property and auto losses received from claims offices across the country.

What to Expect

  • Process and allocate subrogation recovery cheques to the appropriate systems and accurately track unit recoveries.
  • Produce accurate file summaries, prepare subrogation documents, and create payment request packages for external use (determining amounts owed using systems like Guidewire, Audatex, Autosource, and CDS).
  • Prepare files for referral to legal partners, including extracting all system information, completing payment summaries, and organizing file materials.
  • Maintain detailed file records by entering pertinent data into appropriate electronic systems and utilizing Excel for quick, accurate reporting.
  • Maintain a large volume of follow-up correspondence in a timely manner, handling inbound inquiries from internal staff and third parties.
  • Assist the broader subrogation unit with essential administrative duties and other tasks as required, while maintaining your workload within established service standards.
  • Review and analyze claims for subrogation potential and assist in determining the ultimate probable outcome of recovery.
  • Identify and pursue potential responsible parties, contacting third parties, third-party insurers, or lawyers to initiate settlement negotiations.
  • Act as an advocate for the team, increasing subrogation awareness and providing support to our claims partners across Canada.

What You Bringย

  • A University degree, a 2-year college diploma, or working towards your CIP designation would be an asset.ย
  • 2 to 5 years of office or claims handling experience (preference given to subrogation experience).
  • Detail oriented with strong organizational skills.
  • Exposure to support functions in a claims area, including familiarity with Oracle-based systems.
  • Excellent computer skills with high proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, make quick decisions, and thrive in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with a professional, courteous approach to all interactions (Customer Service or Call Centre experience is an asset).
  • Introductory negotiation and litigation experience would be an asset.
  • Bilingualism in English and French is considered an asset.

Salary Range: $45,000-$70,900

Actual salary for the role may vary depending on work location of the successful candidate and other factors including but not limited to, skills, education, experience, working conditions and the local labour market.

We're actively seeking diverse backgrounds and perspectives to help us make insurance better. At Definity, inclusion, diversity, and equity aren't just "nice to have" - they're essential to our success.ย

What's in it for you?

  • Hybrid work schedule for most roles
  • Company share ownership program

  • Pension and savings programs, with company-matched RRSP contributions
